About this ebook
If you’re someone who feels empathy at an intense level, it can be difficult to navigate the world. You may feel others don’t understand you, or you may feel that the weight of others’ negative emotions is simply too much to bear. Maybe others accuse you of being “too sensitive.” Sound familiar?
In Empath Up!: How to Embrace the Gift of Empathy, an audio course from Scribd Coach, psychologist Cheryl Hutchinson argues that there’s simply no such thing as “too sensitive.” In this course, Hutchinson argues that there is power empathy — that, contrary to the narrative of “too sensitive,” sensitivity could be our greatest strength. Using a scientific, evidence-based approach, Hutchinson explains why being sensitive is actually a good thing, how to identify and manage taking on someone else’s emotional energy, how to increase positive emotions in your own life, and how to protect your emotions as an empath. She also shares exercises along the way so you can begin putting what you’ve learned into practice right away.
No one is “too sensitive” — but they may not know just how strong their sensitivity makes them. In Empath Up!, Cheryl Hutchinson aims to light the way.

Introduction
Welcome! I’m Cheryl Hutchinson, and this is Empath Up!: How to Embrace the Gift of Empathy, a course from Scribd. I’m so glad you’ve decided to join me for this close look at living as an empath.
Stop me if this sounds familiar: When I was a child, I struggled with overwhelming emotions. I was shy and quiet and felt bewildered by the world.
It wasn’t until a health crisis that I was able to stop and think: How can I use my sensitivity to my benefit? What if my empathy and sensitivity didn’t make my life a challenge, but could actually help me rise above the difficulties I encounter? I decided to learn more about positive ways to live as an empath, including using my PhD in psychology. Those lessons I’ve learned about how to harness the power of being an empath are the same ones you’ll learn in this course. A lot of the stuff out there about being an empath is, if you’ll pardon the expression, a bit woo-woo
— crystals, incense, tarot cards — and while I respect that those things are helpful for some people, it just wasn’t the right path for me. If you feel as though the woo-woo empath stuff isn’t working for you, no worries: I’ve set up this course to center around evidence-based tools and tricks to help you unleash your empath potential to benefit yourself and those around you. I want you to start realizing and claiming your power. I don’t want you to give your power away to other people or to objects. You’re in control. So if you like some of the woo-woo
stuff you’re already doing, by all means, please keep doing it — this course doesn’t contradict any other thoughts or theories around being an empath. Instead, I hope you’ll come away with even more knowledge of how to navigate the world as a highly sensitive person or HSP. I don’t want you to give up anything that works for you — but want to give you the tools to figure out what works best for you!
Before we dive into the course, let’s start out with the basics. What do we mean when we say empath?
Empaths can’t help but pick up the energy around them, soaking it up like a sponge. We literally absorb other people’s
