Introduction
Hello, and welcome to Self-Compassion: Sweeten Your Life Through Kindness and Understanding, a course from Scribd Coach. I’ll be your guide through this journey towards self-love, understanding, and compassion.
When you think about self-compassion, what is the first thought or emotion that comes to mind? For a lot of people, this is a complicated question to answer. There may be feelings of guilt, sadness, or even anger. Maybe you think, I’m sure it’s different for everyone.
But we all struggle to welcome self-compassion into our lives for one reason or another. So I want to kick this course off just by stating a few simple facts about self-compassion — starting with debunking some misconceptions about self-compassion.
Self-compassion is not complacency. Self-compassion is often misunderstood as an excuse to not strive for more. You can be held accountable and work on improving yourself, even with self-compassion.
Self-compassion is not self-pity. Self-pity is egocentric. It’s me and my issues
.
Self-compassion is holistic. It’s me and my experience, shared among many other human beings.
Finally, self-compassion is not self-indulgence. Self-compassion is level-headed. Who’s really the culprit behind indulgence in your mind? It’s probably your inner critic, who is likely keeping you back more often than it is pushing you forward.
Bearing that in mind, then: What exactly is self-compassion?
Well, according to our framework, self-compassion consists of three components: self-kindness, sense of common humanity, and mindfulness.
Self-kindness is pretty straightforward. It entails doing and thinking kind things for yourself. It can also include undoing the harmful ways of behaving or thinking that we’ve picked up over time or, in other words, unlearning unhealthy coping mechanisms. In a sense, self-kindness is approaching yourself as if you were your best friend. Oftentimes, when people think about self-compassion, they are mostly just considering self-kindness.
A sense of common humanity is an understanding that you are not alone. The suffering, yearning, pleasure, pain, etc. that you feel has been felt since the beginning of all humanity. You are part of a shared human experience and your life impacts others — even when it doesn't feel like it.
To illustrate this idea of interconnectedness, I’d actually like to share with you the story of
