Hello everyone! I’m Erman Misirlisoy, and this is Think Yourself Happier, a course from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me on this exciting journey.

Have you ever felt depressed? I know this is a rather direct question from someone you’ve just met, but my guess is, if you clicked on this course, chances are you’re struggling with being happy sometimes. We often hear the word depression used to describe long periods of sadness in people that can range from mild to severe. But what is depression really about, and why does it stop us from experiencing happiness? Let’s talk about that.

Clinicians tend to define depression as a mood disorder. When we put it this way, it’s clear why so many think of depression in terms of emotions first and foremost. Now, I’m not here to say that this definition is inaccurate because there’s a lot of truth to it, but it also misses the other major aspect of depression, which is not emotional, but cognitive.

If we think about emotions, they’re not some isolated processes just happening in our brains. In fact, emotions interact with every part of our existence, including the way we think about different situations, make decisions, and communicate with others.

Precisely that’s why the psychological treatment called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is considered to be one of the most effective treatments currently available for depression. CBT seems to work very well for people diagnosed with clinical depression, as well as those who have milder depressive symptoms.
