    Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Inez Jordan, and this is How Do You Show Up?, a course on practicing emotional intelligence from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me. Let’s begin.

We all know, life can be messy. We interact with so many different people on a daily basis, and, oftentimes, our desires or our needs don’t exactly align. This is true of our professional lives, our romantic relationships, and just about any group setting in which more than one person’s needs must be considered. How do we manage these competing needs in a way that is fair and healthy for all parties involved? When is it appropriate to compromise, and when is it important to stand our ground? More often than not, when the going gets tough, taking the time to sit with our emotions and really try to understand what’s going on in our hearts and minds seems like the last thing we can afford to do. But knowing yourself and being intentional in how you show up is the first step in figuring out how to understand the needs of others so that you can build strong, healthy relationships. The process by which you do this--setting yourself up to contribute ethically to the world around you--is called emotional intelligence.

I’d like to begin our exploration of emotional intelligence by giving you a few questions to consider: How are you received by your peers? Do folks describe you using words like hotheaded? Moody? Sensitive? Are you often misunderstood? Is your message clear? Were you passed over recently for a promotion you were qualified for? How would you describe your relationship with your peers and managers? Are you a good listener? Do you have good listening skills? Do you have good relationships? How do you nurture them? Are you the one person people come to for advice or counsel?

If any of these questions gave you pause, that’s okay--this course is for you.

During our time together, I will break down the concept of emotional intelligence and provide you with a solid foundation of how to exercise it and enjoy its benefits, debunking misconceptions about emotional intelligence along the way.

In the following unit, we’ll get started by explaining--What exactly is an emotion? How many types of emotions are there? What are the impacts of emotions on your mind and body? From there, we’ll define emotional intelligence and talk about why it’s important.

Next, we’ll cover how to manage negative thoughts, self-limiting beliefs, triggers and stress.

After that, we’ll define the four key competencies of emotional intelligence--defining each of the competencies, describing some of the key skill sets you’ll recognize for each and providing hints and tips on how to practice them. We’ll also talk about emotional intelligence for successful leaders - the
