About this ebook

It happens to all of us: You’ve had a problem with a boss or colleague, and when you tell people in your personal life about it, the response is, “Just talk to them about it!” But you know you can’t — that’s why you need the help in the first place! What is to be done when you can’t just talk about it?
In When You Just Can’t Talk About It, an audio course from Scribd Coach, seasoned certified coach Noomi Natan shares how you can address these situations in a way that is constructive, productive, and leads to a healthier, more successful, more enjoyable workplace for everyone. In the course, Natan explains how to look inward to assess why some subjects are difficult to talk about, how to seek out a situation where everybody wins, how to reframe conversations, how to build a foundation of trust, and much more. She also shares written exercises to help you prepare for difficult conversations immediately.
Don’t put off that conversation at work any longer than you have to — let Noomi Natan be your guide.

    Introduction

Hello everyone! This is Noomi Natan, and this is When You Can’t Just Talk About It: How to Navigate Difficult Conversations, a course from Scribd. Thank you for joining me. Let’s begin.

We’ve all been there. You have a problem with your boss or with a colleague, and you're really frustrated, so you’ve gone to your friend or your spouse, and you’ve told them about it. And they say, Well, just talk to them about it, just have a conversation! Your heart sinks because you know you can’t just have a conversation about it. This is why you need help in the first place! If it was that simple, you would have had the conversation to begin with.

    But you can’t.

Maybe you've already tried, or the person or the situation is just particularly difficult, or maybe for all kinds of reasons, you know that you can't just have the conversation. You can’t simply say out loud to them, Hey, this isn’t working, or, You're doing it wrong, or, I'm not comfortable with the way you're doing it, or, This isn't good enough, or, I can't live with this. Whatever it may be, you can't just come out and say it because you know that if you do, it's going to result in even bigger problems.

When I started coaching over thirteen years ago, I was slightly naive, and so was my reaction — "Well, just have
