About this ebook

In Control the Chaos: A Self-Science Approach to Needs, professor of applied social sciences and director of the World Happiness Institute's Chief Happiness Officer certification program Dr. Sandro Formica takes a close look at our psychological needs — how to gain awareness of addressing them, and how they impact your emotional self. Drawing from science and Formica’s background as an academic, Control the Chaos is designed to help you explore happiness and self-awareness through the lens of self-science, with a specific emphasis on the role of needs.

In the course, Formica reviews Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy needs and helps you identify which needs may be going unmet or having an impact on your life; discusses the consequences of letting needs go unmet and how to leave “survival mode” when they are; and offers guidance on ensuring your needs and the needs of others are met in a healthy way. He also shares exercises along the way so you can begin putting what you’ve learned into practice immediately.

As scientifically rigorous as it is accessible, and informed by a positive psychology framework, Formica’s course is a one-stop for understanding the psychological phenomenon of needs — and how to use it to enhance your emotional wellbeing.

We’re all familiar with the concept of needs. But in today’s fast paced society, we’ve lost sight of how deeply connected needs are to our everyday lives. That, or we recognize the importance of our needs, but we’ve developed a very narrow idea of what our needs entail. Perhaps, you’re thinking to yourself, Hmm, I don’t know. What’s the point? I know what my needs are, and I take care of them. I’m still here, aren’t I? And I would likely agree with you; to some degree, that may be the case. But a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about whether you’re meeting the needs that will help you survive the day. The issue is: are you aware of how you take care of
