    Hello everyone, and welcome to Kickstart Your Body Image: Building Confidence and Self-Love for Lasting Change, a course from Scribd. I’m Tessie Tracy. Thanks for joining me.

    One way or another, we all struggle with some level of negative body image. Each of our stories might be different, but in today’s world, there’s no shortage of unrealistic standards, assumptions and expectations we pick up from society and in our upbringing that trigger lifelong insecurities about our looks.

    We’re bombarded with social media and advertising that tell us, even on a subconscious level that we don’t always realize, that we’re only considered pretty or successful or that we’ll only find love if we look a certain way. Unfortunately, it’s reinforced even more when it comes from our parents or our teachers — authority figures who we trust. They’re human, too, and they’ve internalized the same standards of beauty and success that are pushed on all of us.

    These are complicated issues that take up a lot of our time and emotional energy. Just by taking it all in on a daily basis, we very easily develop a complex of negative body image. For example, when I was a kid, I hated my frizzy hair because no one else around me had it and because kids would poke fun at me for it. Even now, as an adult, I still have to make a conscious effort to manage the insecurity I’ve developed in response to those experiences. Whatever it might be for you, if we fit outside of that image that’s pushed on us in even just the smallest way, it can really start to spark an insecurity or negativity that builds throughout our lives.

    We’re so busy trying to meet these standards that we rarely take a moment to step back and realize that it’s these very expectations and the mindsets that they’ve fostered in us are the problem — not us, not our bodies.

    In this course, I’ll be sharing three steps to take back your power and develop a healthier body image: Noticing negative body image thoughts, interrupting them, and building a more positive body image. These steps can be used on
