About this ebook

Effective communication plays a unique role in our professional lives, where the rules of engagement are a little bit more rigid and there’s a higher standard for how we conduct ourselves. If you want to improve your communication skills and build an environment for respectful, productive communication, you’ll need to learn how to recognize ineffective communication styles and find ways to address them.

Building Effective Workplace Communication, an audio course from Scribd Coach, will help you do just that. In the course, PhD, Shift Management CEO, and trainer Marie Gervais explains the different dysfunctional communication styles — aggressive, passive, passive aggressive, and assertive — and the signs of each, the differences between them, why each type reacts the way they do, and how you can handle them. She also explains how this ties into workplace politics and offers exercises to help you apply what you’ve learned so you can begin having healthier, more productive conversations at work right away.

    Introduction

Hello everyone! I’m Marie Gervais, and this is Building Effective Workplace Communication: How to Deal with Ineffective Communication and Workplace Politics a course from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me. Let’s dive in.

It’s no secret that, simply put, figuring out how to best communicate with others can be difficult. We all want different things, and I’d like to think that many of us want to do a decent job of respecting other people as we navigate the pursuit of our needs and desires. Healthy communication is the key to looking out for ourselves, and the foundation of healthy communication is respectful and well-intentioned. But it isn’t always easy. Old, ineffective communication patterns can interfere with even the best of intentions to interact respectfully.

Communicating effectively can be difficult enough in our personal lives, but it plays a unique role in our professional lives, where the rules of engagement are a bit more rigid, and there is a higher standard for how we conduct ourselves. Despite this higher expectation, it may not always seem like there’s much space to really improve communication in the workplace unless it is consciously conceived of and executed by management.

Whether in or out of the office, if you want to improve your own communication skills and build an environment for respectful, productive communication. Part of that project involves recognizing ineffective communication styles and finding ways to address them

This course is designed to give you a fundamental understanding of ineffective communication
