Introduction
Hi everyone! Thanks for joining me today. My name is Patrick King. This is Beyond Small Talk,
a course from Scribd Coach. I am so delighted to walk you through this course and to help you get started on your journey to mastering conversations, beyond small talk.
The world we live in is not a meritocracy, and many people understand this. However, many of us come to this realization when we’ve been dealt a big blow in life. As we grow up, we are told that if we just work hard enough and become the best, our success will open more doors for us. In reality though, even those who are qualified and have the best credentials don’t find the success they deserve. They are often overlooked when it comes to getting promoted, making partner, or even getting an interview. How many people have you heard complain about their superior’s incompetence? But no matter how much the subordinates complain, this person keeps scaling up the ranks, surpassing the people whose meticulous work has kept the department from imploding.
Life is about who you know.
I’m sure you’ve heard this saying before. You’ve even said it at one time or another. While this may apply to many situations, I’d like to amend this saying and add, life is not just about who you know, it’s about who likes you.
Social skills matter because they give us the boost to achieve the success we’ve always dreamed of. Think of your social skills as a greasy crowbar, helping you pry the door open so that you can get into the room you were locked out of.
Adopting the social skills
