Social Magnetism - Ben Chai
IT WAS AROUND THE 10TH NETWORKING event of my life that I felt that something was… amiss. It was close to the 50th that I started to get a handle on what was wrong with the events I was going to. Finally, after attending hundreds of events was I finally able to vocalise what my issue was.
I hated networking.
I hated the constant sales pitches, I hated the faux niceties, but most of all I hated how much of my time it was taking. I was going to three networking events a week, spending 12 hours Monday to Friday (and the occasional weekend tradeshow) standing around in a suit meeting people who, although excellent business people, I wasn’t gelling with.
And then, suddenly! A breakthrough!
After another night of meeting new people, my inner pocket brimming with business cards to follow-up on the next day, I realised what I was doing wrong. I love meeting people, I love spending time with passionate people, I love connecting people and seeing those relationships come to fruition, so why was I having such a bad time?
Night after night I was meeting people that wore suits of armour with Italian labels. I was meeting people so well trained at meeting people that I may as well have been on a hand-shaking conveyor belt. Everyone was so polite, so formal, so… unbalanced. Not unbalanced
in an insane way, I mean in a way that was too shiny, too pristine. I was looking for business partners, and I needed to see if after they’d been through the mud and muck, they’d still have that smile, composure, and grace.
It doesn’t matter if they’re a vendor, a supplier, or a client. If you’re buying or selling something to someone, you’re going into business with them. You’ve got to know that they’re a good bet, see how they are under pressure, if they can take a hit and get-up.
I wrote this book to detail the tactics and techniques that I use on a daily basis to find, talk to, and magnetically attract the right people into my life. I literally cannot stop meeting amazing, genuine, go-getting people. Half the time, they’re the ones that approach me!
How to tell if you’re ready for this book
If, like me, you’re looking to draw incredibly smart business minds into your circle then you’re in the right place. But before we go into this, I want to make sure that you’re ready to receive the information I’m about to tell you.
The first thing you need to have is the willingness to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. One of the traits this book will have you practice and understand is how to be comfortable in any situation. Part of social magnetism is projecting out into the world "Don’t worry team, I’ve got this," which didn’t come naturally to me and is a skill that needs to be developed.
The second must-have is the time and drive to sit-down and complete the exercises that we’ve written. I’ve read hundreds of books like this one, and the only ones that have actually helped me are the books that’s lessons I’ve actively put into my life. A book is worthless if you mentally accept what it has to say, but don’t physically put into practice the lessons in front of you.
The final essential is a desire to create something bigger than yourself. This may be a business, a charitable project, or even change the zeitgeist of our age! It doesn’t matter what stage of the journey you’re at, if you’ve just had an idea, are a solo-preneur treading water, or if you’ve got 100,000 followers on Twitter. You need to have something that’s greater than you. Why?
Greatness attracts greatness.
Unless you’re working toward something phenomenal you won’t find phenomenal people that want to be a part of what you’re doing.
What you’re going to get from reading this book
This book is about evolving your inner world and outer world at the same time, to ensure that the two are congruent with each other. Congruency is when your outer world reflects your inner beliefs and understanding about the types of people you should be hanging out with.
By reading this book and completing the exercises, your inner world will evolve and you’ll:
Have a deep understanding of the value that you can provide others
Build an authentic confidence that will radiate out of yourself
Understand the innate charm of compassion, empathy, and figuring out what people really want
At the same time, we’ll be working on evolving your outer world as well, including:
Building a life around meeting brilliant business minds, doing things that you love to do
Having a clear understanding of what high-performance, high-achieving people value, and how to provide that value
Creating a personal narrative around your life that stops people saying, Who is this person?
and start saying, "Who IS this person?!"
In the next 10 chapters, I’m going to share with you everything I’ve learned about being socially magnetic. It’s not just business that the techniques have helped me with, it’s helped integrate my business life with my personal life so that they don’t feel so…at odds. The skills have also deepened my existing relationships with friends and family, by developing a wider understanding of the intricacies of communication.
All of the exercises and lessons in this book are from situations and experiences that I’ve personally been through and I’ve made all the mistakes so that you don’t have to.
Thanks for picking up this book, it was an absolute blast to write and I can’t wait to teach you guys how to become Socially Magnetic.

A Note from the Dr. Who of Business
WHATEVER YOUR STATUS AND PERSONAL AMBITIONS are, one of the most important life skills you can have is the ability to network and socialise effectively. The ability to network effectively opens doors of infinite possibility to you.
We all have written or unwritten goals in our lives. Here are just a few scenarios where it becomes painfully obvious how important the ability to network is:
You are a business person or entrepreneur requiring funding, partnerships, or more sales.
You have been made redundant and desperately need to get a new job.
You have been single for years and would like to find the love of your life.
You have a terminally ill relative and need to find them the right medical expertise.
You want to have a long-lived career.
You want to get a promotion.
You work in the servicing industry and want to get more tips in your job.
You can quickly see from the above scenarios that the adage, "it isn’t what you know, it’s who you know," is still relevant in today’s world of social media, and screen-to-screen interactions.
The ability to effectively network and socialise will enable you to reach any goal you have today or in the future.
In this book, we share with you tricks and tips to effectively network at events. These events could be a friend’s party, a dinner, an exhibition, a seminar, a political or religious gathering, online in a forum or whichever social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on) you enjoy participating in.
Our focus in this book is to help
