About this ebook

Many people believe that mental illness can’t happen to them — it’s not uncommon to minimize mental health difficulties as they emerge. As a result, we may bottle up our feelings instead of seeking health. And given the stigma that surrounds mental health, it’s not surprising that many of us feel this way. But mental health crises can happen to anyone, and it’s important to learn how to cope with our struggles to help ourselves and end the stigmas that prevent the proper acquisition of care.

In Break the Stigma, an audio course from Scribd Coach, neuroscientist and writer Simon Spichak explains how we can reshape how we look at mental health and ensure that we’re taking care of ourselves to handle periods of poor mental health. In the course, Spichak explores the limitations of our current mental health system; how to manage anxiety and intrusive thoughts; how to reduce stress and improve mental health by developing healthy habits; how to get through burnout using self-compassion, community, and self-care; and more. He also shares exercises so you can begin putting what you’ve learned into practice immediately.

Spichak’s course is honest, empathetic, and evidence-based. If you’re looking to learn more about mental health or support others struggling with theirs, Spichak’s course is an excellent overview of the topic.

    Introduction

Hello and welcome to Break the Stigma: Normalizing Preventative Mental Healthcare, a Scribd course. My name is Simon Spichak, and we’re going to discuss the benefits of preventative mental health and some different ways you can reduce stress and avoid burnout.

Mental health does not discriminate. Depression strikes the rich as it does the poor. Anxiety doesn’t care what kind of car you drive or what kind of house you own. Schizophrenia doesn’t care about your favorite TV show. No matter who you are or where you come from, each of us, from birth, is vulnerable to the many factors that contribute to mental illness.

Yet many of us still believe that it can’t happen to us. And if we encounter anything that suggests otherwise, we do everything we can to suppress, refute, or ignore it. We remind ourselves of how fortunate we are in our lives, and ask, "How could I possibly be depressed? There’s no way my life is so bad that I need antidepressants." Instead of seeking
