About this ebook
Oftentimes, we make the decision to take control of our lives — but we struggle to know where to start. We often look in the wrong places… but what if we focused inward to take control of how we interpret our experiences and how we think, feel, and behave?
That process is called emotional regulation, and it happens to be something that licensed counselor and mental health practitioner Deanna Richards knows a thing or two about. In The Emotion Regulation Crash Course, an audio course from Scribd Coach, she shares this knowledge, gained from years of experience as a counselor. In the course, ze defines emotional regulation, explains how to discern between thoughts and emotions, provides tips for managing emotions and triggers, and offers advice for how to navigate and communicate about challenging, unsettling inner worlds.
If you’re ready to learn what emotional regulation is all about and bring it into your own life, look no further than Deanna Richards.

Introduction
Hello, everyone! My name is Deanna Richards, a psychotherapist and co-founder of On the Mend, and this is The Emotional Regulation Crash Course, a course from Scribd. Thank you for joining me.
Oftentimes, when we make the decision to take control of our lives — whether it’s finding a job we’re truly happy with, building healthier relationships, or maybe just reducing stress in our daily lives — the hardest part can be figuring out where to start.
We look around and ask ourselves, What can I change externally so that I feel better about my life?
When things inevitably don’t go as we planned, we can get frustrated or begin to feel intimidated. That’s because we can’t always control our external circumstances or what other people say and do. We look for changes in the wrong places.
Instead of looking at our external lives, we need to focus inward. There, we find that we can control our responses to our external circumstances. We can control how we interpret our experiences and how we consequently think, feel, and behave.
This process is called emotional regulation, and it’s what this course is all about.
In this course, we’re going to define emotional regulation and discuss the differences between thoughts and emotions. We’ll also learn how to navigate and communicate about our sometimes challenging and scary interior worlds.
To break down some of our internal barriers, we’ll discuss challenging emotions and triggers. How can we manage those when they arise? I’ll give you some mindfulness strategies and tips on how to use healthy distractions. Then, we’ll wrap up by spending some time talking about
