Mike

He was sitting at table with his wife and children when his phone rang. The shrill tone sent shivers down his spine and for a while be was anxious again to leave. Stella looked at him with tenderness in her eyes. He took a deep breath and nodded in assurance. He was not okay with the fact that they were still in this town. With every time they waste, Small Jay was advancing on them.

Mike got up from table and quickly reached out for the phone, stopping it from crying out helplessly. He put the phone to his ears and was surprised at the voice that came on.

Will? He asked to make sure he was speaking with the right person.

I will send an address. Mike said after Will’s explained their condition to him.

He chuckled excitedly and dropped the phone, happy to have two of his team mates back. He returned to the table and faced his wife.

Will and Court escaped. They are on their way here and we should be ready to go as soon as they get here. Mike said.

Stella nodded and proceeded to put more food on their daughter’s plate. Cindy, their three year old child ate her food, oblivious of whatever looming danger her parents might be avoiding. Mike smiled at her, hoping that she would remain oblivious for as long as she can. He would try to make sure that the issue between Big Tom and his best buddy would be over before his child grows into it.

Mike continued eating from his plate, thinking of how he could best Big Tom. Lisa’s words came to him again, biting him in the skin.

You are the government. You just need to arrest him!

He remembered the look of confusion that had been on her face when she’d said the words to him but only he could understand what it means to be working with unreliable colleagues. If he must win this battle the government way, he would have to get support from someone who’s words can trump every other person’s. That was hard. The Attorney General could do that but he was way up the ladder. Nonetheless, Mike’s got to find a way, and soon, too.

What are you thinking about? His wife asked, breaking into his thoughts.

Mike looked up at her and shook his head. Nothing.

He turned to see his daughter staring at him. Eat. The girl said.

Mike nodded and scooped some more food into his mouth. He smiled at his daughter and patted her small hands. Stella finished eating first. She went into their bedroom and Mike was left with Cindy.

Will you take me to school tomorrow, daddy? The little girl asked. It broke Mike’s heart; her naivety.

Yes, baby, but in a new school.

I like my school.

I know you do, baby, but some bad people are in town and I don’t want them to do anything to you or mommy. Mike explained, hoping the girl would understand him.  Fortunately, the girl just nodded and continued
