Evelyn

Evelyn and Courtney laughed over the last story that Courtney just told. It was the story of her life in prison. The thought of her having the most fun of her life in prison was sad. Evelyn thought she should have given her a chance from the beginning. She just couldn’t because she thought it would be best to keep a thief and liar away from her sister and mom.

Courtney cleared her throat, and Evelyn looked up from her cup. They’d stopped on their way here and picked up some drinks and snacks along the road.

You told them I stole, Courtney said in a calm tone. Evelyn was not sure whether she was asking or simply accusing her. Her tone sounded uncertain.

Evelyn shrugged. I guess I did!

Courtney chuckled. Guess? You had some kind of proof presented, didn’t you?

Evelyn looked away. She shook her head and turned back to Courtney. That girl’s face didn’t show.

What girl?

The one in the picture, Evelyn shrugged. Courtney laughed.

You mean it wasn’t me there?

Of course it wasn’t you! You were only unfortunate to have shared the same features as that girl. The image was blurred, Evelyn explained. She felt a little ashamed of herself.

Woah… do you still have the picture?

Evelyn thought that it was weird that Courtney thought she was actually the girl in the picture.

Yeah. I do. It’s in the drawer back home… Evelyn thought she heard a sound outside. She looked out through the slight opening of the courtyard.

What? Courtney asked.

I heard something…

Oh, must be Will! He took a little walk, I guess. We were too busy getting acquainted, Courtney chuckled.

Evelyn nodded. She got up and started towards one of the small windows in the room. She parted the blind and looked out into the field. Will was not there. She frowned.

Will is not in the yard, she said.

What is that? Courtney was coming towards the window. Evelyn kept looking at the yard.

Just as Courtney came up to her, Timeon came out of the bushes surrounding the house. Evelyn gasped when she noticed the other men behind him.

We have to go… Courtney whispered, dragging her roughly toward the front of the house.

Will…what about him? Evelyn asked.

Courtney roughly shoved her into the passenger seat while she got behind the steering wheel of the car. She started the car and drove out of the compound. From the side mirror, Evelyn saw Timeon and the other men chasing after them. They fired several shots at the car, but Courtney was out of sight.

What about Will? Evelyn asked again.

Courtney turned to her with a look of pity in her eyes. You saw those men. They must have Will with them!

Evelyn gasped. I hope he’s alive at least!

I hope so, too.

Courtney continued driving. Evelyn wondered where she was taking them.

Where are you taking us to?
