Cowboy Love and Mystery Book 18 - Fool - Claire Rose

    1

    Many years ago…

    Small Jay

The sky wore a bright face. It had rained the night before, and there was a rainbow in the sky as the sun rose. Two boys stepped out of the wide bungalow that served as their home, excitement written all over their faces. Laughter filled the air, piercing the unusual silence of Devilskin, now the H ornet’s den, as the smaller of the two broke into a sudden run.

Tommy, come on! Small Jay taunted his little brother as he raced toward the warehouse.

Their mom was inside, taking a nap. That would explain why no one complained about the noise from the two boys. Their father was out on one of his numerous adult duties.

Tommy caught up with the older boy. It was hard to tell that Small Jay was the older one. He had a flexible, small frame, while Tommy towered over him by a few inches.

Is this how far your spindly, tiny legs can carry you? Tommy teased.

Nah… Small Jay shook his head and sped off without any warning. He did not stop until he was at the entrance of the warehouse. Tommy was running a few yards late. Small Jay grinned from ear to ear as Tommy stopped in front of him.

Don’t be silly. You are hardly being fair! Tommy complained.

Small Jay reeled with laughter. His brother would always find one excuse or the other whenever he was beaten.

My spindly legs won this one, Biggie! I’m not letting you 'complain' me to death, Small Jay chuckled and went into the warehouse. Tommy followed him.

How long do you think Father will be gone for, today? Tommy asked as they settled down on the neatly spread mat in the center of the room. Small Jay had set it up for this moment a few hours ago.

We can’t say. His work is so unpredictable, Small Jay shrugged.

What if we are caught? Tommy’s tone was laced with worry.

We are only in here talking. Nothing more. Small Jay bit his lip. He didn’t think having a tight bond with his little brother was anything bad.

Father forbids us to do any of this.

We are clearly not going to listen to him, are we?

Tommy shrugged. Small Jay sighed and settled down beside him. He thought hard about his bond with Tommy. He was beginning to feel something else. It felt weird, but he was convinced it was not weird at all. He studied the worry settled on his brother’s forehead. He reached out and held Tommy’s hand. The latter turned to face Small Jay.

I feel wrong! Tommy blurted out.

    Small Jay frowned. How so?

Tommy shrugged and remained quiet. Small Jay looked down at their hands, intertwined. Tommy was caressing his palms in a very off-hand manner. Small Jay wondered if those gestures had anything to do with why Tommy felt wrong. There was no way he could tell if he didn’t try to find out.

Impulsively, Small Jay leaned closer and kissed his brother on the cheek. That kind of wrong?

Tommy turned and stared at Small Jay. His eyes grew rounder, and he struggled to let some words out of his mouth.

    You are my brother.

No, not in the real sense, Small Jay
