Chapter One
Tommy Grey just arrived in Manchester, New Hampshire, a city on the Merrimack River in the southern part of the state. Fresh out of college and ready to teach about Vampire Mythology, he didn’t expect his life to be turned into a bloody race to solve the most talked about mystery of the century. His friend, Will Johnson, followed Tommy to Manchester in search of something new and exciting. Little did he expect something was waiting for him around the corner.
A mysterious woman with piercing green eyes peered around the corner of an abandoned house. She examined the two friends unload a moving van, placing furniture inside their rented home. She licked her cold lips and dragged her teeth across her lower lip, enticed by the pulsing neck vein that protruded wildly through Tommy’s pale skin. She hummed to herself with satisfaction as a slow tingle surged through her chilled body.
Will, dressed ironically in monk garb, stepped down from the back of the moving van sensing someone was studying them. A slow chill spilled into his spine causing him to shiver. Tommy cocked his head to the side, curious what had his friend spooked.
ROAR!
Tommy, hidden on the side of the van, jumped toward Will scaring the color out of his dark brown skin.
Really, Tommy? Really?
He clutched his chest from fright.
What has you so riled?
Tommy wondered.
I don’t know. I get this feeling we’re being watched.
Will examined his surroundings paying close attention to the rustling wind.
You always become such a scaredy-cat during Halloween time.
Tommy chuckled, obviously not phased with his friend.
Tommy played with his black hair, pulling his slender fingers through its smooth texture. The scattered breeze moved a few stray strands onto his face. He brushed his mid-length hair away and continued teasing his friend.
The mysterious woman studied the two, ensuring she remained hidden from their sights. A low rumble reverberated from her belly. She rested her hand on her stomach and muttered.
Don’t worry. You shall get what you need.
Her voice, low and erotic, calmed her hungry insides.
Will gathered the last bit of their belongings and exited the van. As he closed the double doors in the back, a glint of green flashed from the corner of his eyes. His left hand played with his frizzy hair, providing a distraction from the eerie atmosphere in the area. A small gust of wind carried a haunting voice toward his ears. He drummed his ears with his index fingers, shaking out the voice he heard.
BOO!
Tommy shouted with his fingers stretched out in an evil manner.
Come on! Why do you do these things!?
Will, still shaking under his robe, became annoyed.
Too easy.
Tommy walked away, laughing at his friend’s reaction.
As Will regained composure, the flash of green from earlier returned. He inspected the area from afar and became wide eyed when a glimpse of a woman came into view. Will turned uncomfortable from the prying eyes in the distance. What left an unsettling experience for him was the aura surrounding her. It didn’t seem right to him.
What are you looking at?
Tommy observed the same spot as Will, hoping to find something.
Nothing.
Will’s blue eyes seemed distant.
Will moved forward and disappeared inside their rental. Tommy squinted his small, almond-shaped eyes, focusing on whatever his friend saw. From beyond the thick wall of trees a residual outline of a person vanished.
Tommy huffed slowly trying to convince himself no one was there. Will took this opportunity to seek revenge on his friend and let a low growl escape from his mouth.
What the!?
Tommy spun around quickly, vaulting backward to avoid an injury from the impending doom by his ankles.
Got ya!
Will pointed, cackling hysterically.
I guess I deserved that.
Tommy responded when the situation proved to be a prank.
I’m famished. Let’s go grab a bite to eat.
Will suggested.
Beyond the corner of the abandoned house, the woman’s stomach growled loudly. She winced at the clamor happening inside her. The empty feeling in the depths of her belly grew significantly.
Did you hear that?
Will became inquisitive to the sound.
No.
Tommy lied to his friend. He heard the growling noise, and it shook his bones. Will gulped hard as a thought sprang to mind.
You don’t think there’s a bear around here, do you?
Will wiped a bead of nervous sweat from his dark brows.
I don’t know, but what I can tell you is if we don’t get something to eat I’ll pounce!
Tommy lunged forward and targeted his friend’s neck, teasing him further.
I really wish you wouldn’t joke about vampires. Nothing about them is funny.
Will’s skin formed tiny bumps on the surface.
"I swear, you’re the
