Evelyn

I can’t find the money I left under the pillow, Evey! Did you happen to come across it by any chance?

Evelyn was sitting in the big armchair in the living room. It was the only one there, and she was lucky that Lisa or Courtney was not in the house to fight with her over the space. She looked up at her mother with a deep frown on her face.

I didn’t think there’d be money under your pillow! I would have gladly taken it and used it to pay for the catering lessons I have been disturbing you and your husband about! Evelyn answered  indignantly.

That money is not mine. You know I would give you anything you want if I could, her mother defended.

Evelyn chuckled, returning to the book on her lap. Well… I didn’t happen to come across it by chance. Maybe you should ask Lisa and her new favorite sister!

Evelyn was jealous. She was angry that her sister had abandoned her for the new girl that arrived at their doorstep days ago. Evelyn looked up to see her mother’s eyes on her. She moved uneasily in her seat. It felt like her mother was reading her thoughts.

Her mother sighed and settled down on the chair’s armrest. She put her arm around Evelyn’s shoulder and leaned in.

I don’t like her, either, her mother whispered.

Evelyn turned to her mother. She was grateful that her feelings resonated with someone else’s. Right?

Yes! How can she just waltz into our lives, and steal our most precious people from us? Did you notice how your father dotes on her? herr mom asked, straightening up.

Evelyn sighed. I hate her pity stories! Lisa feels for her, and I noticed how she’s been giving her all of her old clothes.

Her mom chuckled. Her mother was a prostitute, and up until now, your father never told me he had an affair with someone outside our home!

Evelyn knew her mother was sad from the tone of her voice. She reached for her hand and squeezed it tightly.

I am scared, her mother said.

Of what?

Why? Evelyn asked.

Evelyn sighed. Her mother patted her back and got up. I should ask your father about the missing money. He might have taken it!

I’ll go with you, Evelyn said, getting up too. There’s nothing for me to do here anyway, she added when her mother gave her the side-eye.
