    Game’S Over - D. M. Thompson

    Prologue

    101615-THOM-layout-low.pdf

Jenny heard a rattling noise coming from the door. She looked up, and pieces of wood flew across the living room. Winston jumped up off the floor where he was watching television and ran to Jenny, wrapping his arms around her waist. She dropped the telephone and covered his eyes with her hands, pushing his head closer to her bosom. The cold air filled the room as Elliot Sparks entered with Winston’s mother, Celia Calloway.

Take the boy into the other room, Jenny! Elliot yelled as he walked past them, carrying Celia to the nearest bedroom.

Come, Winston, let’s go to your room.

No, I want my mom! Winston yelled and stared as his mother was being carried past him. She was barefoot. Elliot had one of her red shoes protruding from one of his coat pockets. Her face was black-and-blue with bright-red blood coming from her nose. One of her eyes was shut. Her top lip was split and unusually large. She was crying and murmuring something, and the one thing Winston saw in horror was that she had a large gap where two of her teeth used to be.

Jenny, take the boy to his room and shut the door please! Elliot begged, looking over his shoulders. His face was wet, and his eyes were red and glassy. He was breathing heavily, and his white shirt was wet, half-open, and hanging out of his pants.

I want to be with my mom, Winston cried.

Come, Winston, we’ll look in on her later. Let Mr. Elliot help her now. Winston began to cry as he was being led to his room. Jenny went to the sink, wet a towel, and wiped Winston’s face. Everything is going to be just fine, sweetie, she added.

I want to see my mom, he muffled out from underneath the towel she held to his face.

I know, and you will, as soon as Mr. Elliot comes for us. I promise.

It was sometime later when Elliot walked into the room. Winston had fallen asleep with his head on Jenny’s lap. She slowly eased his head up enough to stand up. She placed his head on a pillow and then joined Elliot, closing the door behind her.

What’s going on, Mr. Elliot? Jenny asked nervously.

No time to explain, Jenny, you need to pack everything up tonight. You guys are going back to Missouri in the morning.

    Why? Jenny asked.

Celia has been fired from the federation. That’s all I can tell you now.

Fired? That’s impossible, she just renewed her contract for three more years.

    No, she didn’t.

Where is she? Jenny looked in the bedroom and saw that it was emptied.

She’s in the hospital. I’m going to drop you and the boy off to see her tomorrow and then I’ve been instructed to take you both back to Missouri. I’ve already called and informed her parents.

    Instructed by whom?

Celia has given me access to act on her behalf.

I will pack her things up, and I will stay with Winston till you come get him tomorrow, but I will not be returning back to Missouri.

Stop thinking of your damn self, and what about the boy? Did he ever mean anything to you? Elliot said in an angry but quieter tone.

You are not going to make me feel bad. I’ve done my job here, and how did she get fired? If she’d been careful, she would not have gotten herself in this mess! Jenny yelled.

Shut your damn mouth. Elliot looked over Jenny’s shoulders and saw Winston.

Where’s my mom, Mr. Elliot? Winston asked.

She’s in the hospital, Elliot said gently. You will see her tomorrow.

I know. I heard the whole conversation. Winston turned and faced Jenny. You said you would always be there for me, and now I see you were just lying. You can pack your things and leave tonight. I will pack my mother’s clothes.

Winston turned and went into his mother’s room, shutting the door behind him.

You are just in shock, Winston, you don’t understand, Jenny said, trying to catch Winston.

    Elliot grabbed her arm.

Do as the boy says, Elliot said and walked past Jenny to join Winston.

Twenty minutes later, Winston and Elliot finished packing, and they both moved to another room because the front door was still broken. Elliot made several phone calls requesting a leave of absence as Winston hardly slept; therefore, he lay there listening to the murmurs that were coming from the main room. He knew Elliot didn’t want him to hear his conversation.

During breakfast, Winston piled a lot of food onto his plate but hardly ate any of it. Elliot ate a little but drank two cups of coffee.

Son, I know this is hard on you, but I’m really proud of the man you are becoming, Elliot said. You’re showing great strength. The strength that your mother is going to need you to have. Is there anything you want to discuss before we get to the hospital?

Who did this to my mom?

Elliot shifted in his seat. I’m not sure. I found her like that.

Elliot didn’t like lying to the boy. He would never lie to his son, but the boy’s age was barely twelve years old. Disappointed, Winston looked down at his plate. After breakfast, Elliot flagged down a cab, and they headed toward the hospital.

As the double doors to the hospital opened, Winston could smell the scent of alcohol. Before they got to Celia’s room, Elliot placed his hands on Winston’s shoulders.

Winston, your mother is in bad shape. You’ll need to know this before we enter the room so that you can prepare yourself for what you are going to see.

I’m prepared, Winston said, looking up at Elliot.

However, Winston was not prepared for what he saw. He slowly walked up to the bed and looked at his mother. He thought she was asleep, but she turned her head to the left. He realized that her left eye was swollen shut.

Hi, hun, Celia managed to say in a muffled, harsh voice. She reached out her left hand to Winston.

Your mother will need your strength now. He could hear Elliot’s words echo in his ears. He grabbed his mother’s hand and kissed her cheek gently.

I told you on the phone he was a man, Celia. Now you see for yourself, Elliot said.

Fighting back his own tears, Winston went to the foot of the bed and opened the silver folder where all of her illnesses as well as medications were recorded.

    Honey, don’t read that chart.

Elliot grabbed the chart, but Winston held on to it and stared into Elliot’s eyes. Elliot let go.

I told you, he is a man now, Elliot said in a firm tone.

Honey, get out of here and go to the airport to catch your flight. Celia’s voice was not heard by Winston. He was lost reading the findings on the chart. Celia had a concussion, a damaged left eye that needed surgery, a fractured nose, a busted lip that required three stitches, lost two front teeth, and two broken ribs. Tears fell profusely from Winston’s eyes. Winston closed the chart and walked over to the bed.

I will enroll in school and work on the farm to help bring in extra money. He kissed her forehead and turned and walked out the door. Your mother will need your strength. Those words followed Winston all the way to the airport and into adulthood.

    Chapter 1

I just don’t understand why you insist on staying with WWC, Celia said and scooped up a heaping of eggs.

I’m renewing my contract for one year, Mom. I’m not staying forever, Mother.

Son, WWC is a large organization, and Kingston is a powerful man. If you’re thinking what I think you are thinking, you had better get that thought out of your head, or else, you are going to end up just like me.

I’m sure you do think that, Mother, because you haven’t shown up for any of my matches.

"If they connect you to me, they’ll ruin you. This is all I’m saying. There’s a new wrestling company getting ready to promote its existence. You can get a job there. Your modeling career is booming. Why don’t you just let this wrestling mess go and work full-time for Vogue? You get paid more money, and you don’t have to get knocked around either."

"Mom, I’ve done everything you’ve asked me to do. I graduated from high school as valedictorian, went to college, got a degree in criminal justice, and accepted Vogue’s offer to appear in their magazine. I need to be a man and make my own decisions now. Winston got up from the table and took his plate over to the kitchen counter. I need your support, and I need to know you are still my number one fan." Winston pulled Celia to her feet and wrapped his arms around her.

You know I am, boy. Celia smiled. Speaking of being a man, you haven’t said anything about a girlfriend lately. Pulling away from his arms, she turned on the water to fill the sink. Are you still with Ms. CEO? Celia could never call her by her name because she disliked the fact that this woman was much older than Winston.

Yes, Mother, I am still seeing Vanessa. She is a great woman, and I really wish you would try harder to get to know her.

    What are you saying, son?

"I am saying that I really like Vanessa,
