    Prologue

At roll call the patrol Captain says to patrolman Rage, Officer, I need to talk with you in my office, please follow me.

It is most unusual to have a Captain take roll call.

In the office, "Have a chair officer. You could help me a lot with a situation I have. You know the new Sergeant list will be posted in three weeks. I need another Sergeant, right now. Sergeant Black is going on medical leave for several weeks. I am moving Sergeant Williams to take his place but then I am short in warrants and booking.

I can’t make an acting Sergeant out of those that have applied for the Sergeant exam. If I make an acting Sergeant and he does not get on the list, that is bad. It is even worse if I appoint an officer and he makes the list. That makes it look like he was picked before the list comes out.

He sits down, Officer Rage I would like you to take a temporary appointment to Sergeant to fill Williams’ position. When the list comes out Sergeant Black will be back, and I will be at full staff. I know you can handle the job, there will be no problems with any officers since they know it is to fill a spot for a brief time.

When do you want me to start?

Today, right now, Sergeant Williams is expecting you. You will have a few days to see how it goes and then I can move him. I even have the strips you can sew on now. I will call Williams and put it out on the wire. Thanks officer Rage.

Patrolman Janet Rage has been on the force about two ½ years. She is bright, aggressive, and dedicated to the job, a lot like the color of her hair. She takes a fair amount of ribbing about her last name and the color of her hair. It usually goes on until they see her empty a clip of 16 rounds at 30 yards into a six-inch circle. If that is not enough, she will crack a few ribs, and be assured she will do it again in the gym.

She is a very attractive young woman but with a real bang. She picked the spot she wanted to finish in the final ranking as a patrolman. She is always looking down the road before she jumps. In slow or almost instant decisions, she is way down the road when she makes one. She appears to be a little too quick in judging situations, but she has yet to be shown wrong.

Officer Rage takes to the warrant and booking area like a fish to water. One suspect on her first shift tries to get smart and so Sergeant Rage shows up at the booking desk.

Sir, if you do not settle down, I will have to take my hat off.

No female cop is going to tell me what to do!

She hands the hat to an officer standing by and with one blow and kick the medics are called. It takes them 15 minutes to revive him. There are no more problems the rest of the shift. Word gets around the cells, don’t mess with the red headed she devil Sergeant.

Chapter 1 It is in another time and place

In the 1890’s a French archeologist is deep in the Guatemala jungle. He is looking for that first city that spawned the first Central American civilization. He has been lost for four weeks. They have been cutting their way through jungle that has not seen a man for centuries.

They come to the crest of a hill and the valley below is covered just as what they have been in. But there is a strange series of straight lines going out from one area not quite as thick in its cover.

Look, that is a city down there. A large city perfectly laid out. I must make detail maps and sightings to determine where I am.

He returns for many years uncovering the over growth and to study the city. It is like the people just got up and carried what they could take and left.

At the temple’s entrance, he points down, These steps are more than just fancy steps. They tell a story and are the history of this city. These lower steps are in good condition and have not been moved by Mother Nature. See the very bottom ones are large and thick.

Walking the steps upward, he knees down, "See the steps near
