About this ebook

Two peoples have warred longer than their history’s records. One civilization has barricaded themselves in caves and man-made tunnels. They left their enemy the open sky. The enemy has begun attacking the cave dwellers in their tunnels. Does the enemy have a plan for their final destruction?
The cave dwellers did not win any battle and yet their enemy has let them refortify one old defensive line outside their tunnels. Is the enemy weaker than anyone thought? The cave dwellers’ Supreme Army Commander has had no control of what is happening and is worried.
In their secure caves, the government is split in what they should do: attack, wait, or hide. The Supreme Army Commander has no idea as to what the enemy is doing or can do.
The cave army is now outside and are soon followed by the farmers. They find good land and more farmers rush outside. They are followed by other cave dwellers wishing to earn extra credits from the farmers to purchase items not available to their Social Orders.
Can the upcoming outside harvest be large enough for the farmers to pay all the credits they have promised?

Chapter The First Battle in the Caves

In a small sparse private residential space, the army’s Supreme Army Commander is studying a work of art on the rock wall. It is hard to tell where the art stops, and the wall begins.

He is dressed in a one-color body suit of gray. His hair is cut short, his eyes are cold and gray; his build is thin but powerful. There is a sense of power about him. He is standing next to his desk of solid rock, worked flat on the top.

His personal Reporter has been waiting the appropriate amount of time and is invited into his private study in his residence. His Reporter has a small mustache, which is required for his insignia and Social Order. His hair is a little longer than the Commanders. The Reporter has the standard black streak down the middle of his hair. If one were to look closely, one would see his hair has been colored lighter, so the black streak will more readily show. Only a very close inspection will reveal an off-color change to his body suit and a slightly different insignia in the clothing.

The Reporter bows slightly as he begins to speak, Sir, they passed through what is recorded in the ancient papers as the first defensive line outside the tunnels. The Wise-ones calculate that time to be over 1000-cycles of the major orb. We retreated as is your standard orders. The enemy followed us into the trapping tunnels, which narrow very quickly, to where they had trouble fighting. Just as your plan foresaw, their forces kept crowding the tunnels, forcing the front enemy warriors into even narrower tunnels. We killed nine of those that did not suffocate, which numbered six. Some tunnels report a sector destroyed. The enemy has withdrawn from the tunnels; in half a sector, all the tunnels will be empty and cleaned. The enemy left very little in their retreat. They may not retreat beyond the first line of defense outside the tunnels for many cycles of the minor orb or at all.

The Recorder pauses to gain his breath.

    That is my battle report.

The Supreme Army Commander waits while his Reporter composes himself, even more.

He continues, We carried all our six ‘empties’ and seven wounded further into the tunnels. Our ‘empties’ are being processed as we speak. The enemy’s fifteen ‘empties’ will be processed later in the Vatting cycle. The Vat rendering process will be in full operation for three working cycles. They lost no breeders.

The Recorder pauses again to gain his breath. He seldom must report of the vats.

    That is my report.

The Supreme High Commander turns with his eye glasses on, and fully faces his Reporter.

He thinks, it is good to face them occasionally. It helps their moral. Really, they are such an unpleasant sight, but they serve a useful purpose.

The Supreme High Commander nods, Very well, continue your duties. Reports by lights when the Vat rendering is complete and how full the Vats are.

The Reporter will do as commanded but thinking as he leaves, the Supreme High Commander maybe wise above all, but he is so ugly even the Vat processing Master might reject him as unfit for the Vats.

The Supreme High Commander leaves immediately from his private residential study after his Reporter leaves. He is travelling to his private military chambers. He is escorted by his private guards as he leaves his residence.

He wonders, how is it for two high, superiors using the best the Vats can offer still produce such a repulsive creature
