A Good Day to Die
He’d heard somewhere about survival in a hostile environment being tricky and the wait always the hardest part. I guess that’s true, he thought, especially when you really have no chance of survival and are simply waiting to die.
Yes, he was going to die, of that there was no doubt. He wouldn’t be going out alone though. Bitterly he thought, in the end the Boners paid the ultimate price today for what they’d done.
Staring through the small viewport toward all the derelict ships, fatalistically he thought of that old Keylon Warrior saying and quietly spoke it out loud. Today is a good day to die.
Casting a quick glance to the row of gauges he noted that it was the largest and brightest. The oxygen indicator gauge was like a flame and he was the moth continually drawn to it. The huge oversized dial was almost to the red zone. He knew that even by limiting his movement and conserving oxygen there was still only a couple of hours remaining. Leaning against the cold steel wall of the escape pod he thought, the fault is entirely mine. I didn’t see it coming, not at all.
Earlier while searching the cabinet containing the emergency kit he found the small device. He now switched on the recorder and started to talk. After all, someday someone might find this little capsule floating out here with all the other space junk. There needed to be a record of what transpired these last days. He owed
