Chapter 1: History Revisited
In the far reaches of our galaxy, lies the Aris System. Although it seems to be just an insignificant flickering light in the depths of space; it was a source of many myths and legends. Through a twist of fate, a long-forgotten past becomes intertwined with the present as you shall soon see. The crew of the 49 Delta were on a routine supply run to Tercon 5, a mining planet in the Aris System. A cosmic storm forced them to set a new course to an uncharted part of space, bringing them face to face with their past. The altered flight plan brought them close to an unexplored moon of Sigma 2, where a short-range signal was emulating. Communications Officer Jones heard a faint signal and immediately tracked it. He turned to Captain Chris Sullivan and informed him.
Jones spoke, Captain, I am picking up a distress call from this Sigma 2 moon.
Sullivan inquired, Can you tell me what kind of signal it is?
Jones hesitantly responded, That's strange; it’s binary, but it’s definitely a Deltrite signal.
Sullivan spoke to Jones, That signal would have to be ancient, what is the message saying?
Jones immediately responded, The message states, I am a drone commander heading to Deltron and the R4 regulator has broken down on my ship and I am unable to continue. Please assist, Targ out.
Sullivan curiously retorted, A drone commander named Targ, I wonder.
Jones posed the question, Captain, do you know this Targ?
Sullivan responded with a hint of uncertainty in his voice, I believe that is the name of the missing drone commander from the Great Slave War.
Jones relayed something he recalled, Sir that makes sense, R4 regulators had been upgraded to Inductors just after the war with the beginning of the Zerion Alliance Treaty. That would put everything on the same time line.
Sullivan agreed, You’re right Jones. Helmsman Ryan, plot a course for that moon, straight away.
Ryan sharply responded, As ordered sir, we shall be there within 35 pentas.
Sullivan instructed his officer, Jones, scan for life forms and check the atmospheric composition and temperature.
Jones respectfully answered, Yes Captain.
Sullivan instructed his Helmsman, Ryan, set the ship down on the surface near the stranded vessel.
Jones stated, The temperatures are below the range of our suits safety limits; it's so cold the suits would fail. No life signs to report. We are unable to go outside the ship; if the drone commander survived, he must come to us.
Sullivan instructed his officer with a hint of anticipation in his voice, Jones, hail the ship and if there is no response we shall pull out and call for an extraction team to haul the ship and contents for further examination.
Jones hailed the ship on the same low band frequency as the distress call, This is Officer Jones of supply ship 49 Delta can we assist you, over.
Targ responded and even though his voice was mechanical, an over tone of excitement was apparent, This is Commander Targ of the cargo ship Alpha 3, the ship has been sitting so long all the ignition cells are depleted. It would take a lot of work to make my ship mobile again, can I get a lift.
Jones seemed puzzled as he addressed Sullivan, Captain if he is an ancient drone he sure doesn't talk like one. He said, get a lift.
Sullivan spoke with excitement as he tried to keep his composure, "It really must be him; he was the first drone with artificial intelligence and
