cean phosphorescence is the naturally occurring (green) light created by certain algae blooms when they are jostled or excited. The effect causes everything passing through the water to be outlined in a glowing light. Millions upon millions of algae together can individually glow for several seconds so the effect is extended in the long-lasting turbulence of any wake either above or below the water. It’s not an everyday occurrence so, when it happens, it can make an otherwise ordinary night at sea
