About this ebook

A 100 years in the past the Roma Empire wondered who and what is in the vast lands north and east of Central Valley. What scrolls can be found talk of a strange woman, the head of a man, and something called ‘The first step.’ The scrolls never say why the attempted expansion was halted. It appears from military records that there were three or more legions nearby. There is even no folk lore or legends about the country and who or what may be there. Never has anyone been seen coming from there.

It is now 100 years later, and the current Emperor wishes to expand, expand. He hides from the Senate his movement of troopers north. He is warned not to expand east of Central Valley in a series of scrolls delivered by canoe using the large river They were written suns before he receives them. But describe his actions as if they were present when they occurred.
He is warned beforehand that three of the four of his legions ordered to Central Valley will never arrive and not one trooper will die by the sword. Scrolls keep coming down the river from the unknown lands and they continue to demand the Emperor respect the treaty’s boundary.
Enraged the Emperor orders 20 legions and the Vice Consul of the Empire to destroy all those in the northern country and claim it for Roma. Just as the scrolls fore told he would.
The Vice Consul is not confronted by a strange woman but the loss of three legions as the scrolls fore told. The woman is but a single young girl on large horse overlooking the empty battle field.
Before the battle can begin, the Vice Consul sends all his legions on a quick march back to their bases. The Emperor seems not care at all. Is the north country safe for another 100 years?

Prologue in the Roma Empire about 326 BC

The Emperor in 325 BC seized Central Valley by arms to secure a road to Port Quid on the North Sea. The battlefield booty goes to Roma and the Emperor. After the peace treaty is signed in Central Valley a small group of dissidences plan a rebellion. It is quickly put down, but their leader escapes.

The Emperor has plans on expanding the Empire into the lands north and east of Central Valley. The rebellion gives him an excuse to move more troops north.

However, no one has been in the dark forest, has ever seen or has contract with anyone from the forest in all their recorded history, oral history, or in their legends. The large river forms a natural boundary between Central Valley and all the lands east of them. The Emperor sends scouts from the North Sea and up the large river in Central Valley trying to contact the people living there. Their exploration of the two areas by water is barred physically in both areas.

A canoe and later a ship bring scrolls to the army commander in Central Valley demanding the return of certain booty taken from the battlefield. A strange woman appears in a boat on the river. They claim it was stolen from them. She demands its return and sets a date.

The booty is a sword and as such the Emperor must have the knowledge of how it was built. He must continue to seek the people in the forest and their knowledge. He sends the Vice Consul to obtain the information by force if necessary.

Scrolls continue to come down the river. They contain certain facts known only to the Vice Consul and Emperor. The Vice Consul returns the stolen booty and the Emperor reports he has found nothing in the vast lands east of Central Valley. There is nothing there of any interest to the Empire. They accept the river as the boundary and will not cross it.

Chapter 1 100 years later in the Roma Empire about 226 BC

It is 100 years later; it is fall in the city of Roma. The vineyards are being plucked of a rich harvest. The fields throughout the Empire are also providing a bountiful surplus. The supplies and tribute for the most part is being stored, as they are off loaded from the ships in Roma or the carts from the wide Ways. The civil authorities are well pleased with themselves, the new storage houses can safety store the goods.

The Senate continues to praise their own efforts cycles after the most current event. What might have turned into a small disagreement between friends is resolved at the negotiating table by the Senate. The southern boundary of the Empire is adjusted. The small disputed territory is acquired at no loss of Roma blood.

Half the people in the disputed land remain with the rest leaving for new lands outside the Empire. They are assisted in leaving by the Roma legion; even some of their carts are loaned to move their goods.

General Agustus is the Commander of all the southern forces and sent specifically by the Emperor to wage the campaign for the rather small pieces of land claimed by the Empire. The new land provides a more defensible position and better controls the access to the southern lands of the Empire.

General Agustus writes a dispatch to the Vice Consul in Roma, after the boundary issue was resolved.

It reads, "Sir, the disputed territory is now under the rule of the Empire. The boundaries have been set and are secure. The people that chose to leave have done so with our assistance in a peaceful manner. The younger people have stayed in the Empire; they see the benefits that are here. From the older ones leaving, I see no military threat.

"It was agreed that the entry point is to be manned by a detachment of joint forces. However, they are having trouble finding any young men to go into their army. I suspect in several months that there will be only Empire troopers at this outpost. I recommend the southern area continue to be staffed by two Centurions for the safety and security of the Roma citizens.

I have ordered the 14th legion back to Roma as we discussed. By the time you receive this I will be halfway back to Roma.

The Vice Consul goes to the Emperor with the news.

The Emperor says, "Vice Consul, inform General Agustus that I welcome him back to Roma and I will review the 14th legion with him when they return. Arrange only
