An English writer of quirky verse, short stories, detective fiction and novels with a sense of the ridiculous, now retired from a career in manufacturing and living in the South West of England.
I feel so damned tired recently. It doesn't seem to matter how long I sleep, I wake up as tired as I was before I closed my eyes. I've been having strange dreams, too.
Sometimes I dream I'm inside a giant wheel, running and running and getting nowhere except exhausted. Other times I dream I'm lying on a bench with huge masked faces looking down at me while they poke about in my brain. Sometimes these dreams are so real that I don't know if I'm awake or asleep.
I'm having one of those moments right now.
I'm looking down a long white corridor. I have no recollection of how I got here. The walls are smooth and glossy white, as is the floor. The corridor stretches away into the distance. It's featureless, apart from shadows at intervals, which suggest that there might be openings, or side branches.
There is an overpowering smell of formaldehyde or something similar. It's all pervading. I think it's coming from the floor or the walls, or both. There's a wall behind me, with no obvious opening or door. I'm standing at the blind end of a corridor. I wonder how I got in here?
I listen carefully and I think I can hear equipment humming somewhere. Something electrical. Maybe it's behind the wall. I can hear voices, too, though I can't understand what they might be saying.
I sniff the wall, experimentally. The smell is definitely coming from there. It's a 'new plastic' sort of smell and I suppose the walls are made of some sort of white plastic. The floor as well. There is a seam between the wall and the floor and here and there a small bead of filler has bulged slightly. Actually, it might be adhesive. I think the floor
