    Chapter 1

Where am I? Why do I hear the sound of seagulls overhead?

It was currently daylight out because black had turned red only a few moments ago. My left arm was in a whole lot of pain, but I did not remember what had caused it. All I knew was that the rocking motion of the surface on which I was currently situated made the throbbing worse.

Slowly, I opened my eyes. Things were certainly blurry, so I tried to blink the blurriness away. I could just make out a vast, blue ocean under the orange sky of dawn. The sun was still a tiny half circle, but it was steadily getting bigger. Overhead, thousands of seagulls were flying around for some mysterious reason.

When the blurriness finally faded, I looked down and saw my hands had been reddened due to sunburns. I also noticed brown logs strapped together with rope that was now damp underneath my legs. Beside me, there was a red backpack with unknown contents. The straps of the backpack were tan and the zipper was black. The backpack did not appear to have any tears or other signs of it being used a whole lot, so I assumed it was new.

Looking outward, there was absolutely nothing else in sight. This was unusual since I remembered hearing some kind of ships go by, but I did not remember how long ago that was. I only remembered that almost everything until now was completely black.

Why am I on a raft? Was I running away? In fact, who am I?

I was lonely out there. There was nobody to talk with. At the same time, this was the first time that I had felt lonely, due to the fact that everything before had been completely black.

Something in my mind told me that I had decided to leave some place without any company, but I did not remember exactly why I chose to do so, if that truly was the reason to why I was on a raft.

Looking at my clothes, I noticed a gray t-shirt that was damp enough to make me believe that I had been out at sea for many days, encountering huge waves. I did not want to believe it though, as I thought that I would have been knocked off the raft. My black pants were in the same condition. However, I could not figure out why I had not gotten sick.

In order to find somewhere to rest, I headed straight, as that was supposedly the source of the seagulls.

A few hours later, I came across an island. Buildings replaced most of the vegetation. Each of the buildings appeared to have different styles. The building in front of my eyes had white walls that had a few spots of wood visible. The shape was not perfectly rectangular or square. The front part had a bit of a slant coming from both the right and the left. At the point where the slant ended, there was straight piece of wall followed by a slant that would have intersected the other one, which slanted towards the door. The blue, tiled roof extended a few inches beyond the tops of the wall and curved upward in the same manner as a quarter pipe. The windows of the building were extremely dirty, as if nobody had lived in it for years. Every other building had the same feeling.

On top of a mountain, there was a lighthouse that kind of looked like a toothpick from the distance, whereas the buildings on the ground were a bit bigger, with the first one that I saw being the biggest.

I sat on the raft next to a pier that reached out six feet into the ocean, wondering why everything felt like it was so empty. There were no signs that suggested that something had happened in recent years.

After becoming bored of my curiosity towards what happened to the village, I pulled myself up onto the pier, which sent a big jolt of pain through my left arm. I had to endure it though, since I did not have anybody to help me.

On the pier, I started having stomach pain. I was not sure if it was due to hunger or injury or something else, but I forced my body to move around some more.

Hello? Is anyone here? I yelled out, in order to make sure that nobody was around.

There was no reply, which seemed to confirm that the village had indeed been abandoned. In a way, it gave me a bit of relief, knowing that nobody would attack me.

A slight breeze was blowing through the island, which seemed to irritate my left arm.

I walked towards the white building I saw and noticed a black door with a silver doorknob on the right.

The previous inhabitants must have left quickly since the door is unlocked.

Inside the building, there was green, wooden flooring that seemed to be completely covered in dust. I would have been able to clean up the mess, but since my left arm was giving me so much trouble, I did not feel like doing anything. The corners of the building were infested with spider webs, but spiders were not around for some strange reason. The back wall held a red, wooden countertop with a yellow, wooden shelf behind it that held hundreds of empty bottles that would have contained alcohol. Most of those bottles were green, but there were a few clear ones, as well as ones that were colored red or blue. To the right, there was a staircase that appeared to be starting to break. The railings were made of iron, but the steps were wooden. The rest of the place was covered with brown, wooden tables and chairs.

I did not bother touching anything, as I had the feeling that my backpack would have everything that I needed for a period of time. I just slowly walked up the stairs, in order to make sure that I did not fall through any cracks.

The top floor was very much like the bottom, but it was riddled with rooms, instead of tables and chairs. Sunlight poured in through a window that was located in the center of the wall. The doors to the rooms were very much like the front door of the building.

I took the first door on my right that I could see, which was surprisingly close to the stairs.

The room held a bed in the center that could easily fit two people and was draped with sheets that had a checkered pattern of pink and white. The bed’s frame looked very sturdy, unlike the stairs. To the left of the bed, there was a silver door with a
