    There’s a troll living in my well…

    I’m a crop farmer and my house is located on land surrounded by fields. Until this past decade, I was outside of the local town’s jurisdiction, but over time, the town has expanded to accommodate new folk wanting the benefit of ‘city’ living. In its quest for providing suburban homes, on paper I have finally been encompassed within its governmental grasp.

    The benefits, and there are certain benefits, are basic.

    The road past my farm is no longer dirt. They have put in an asphalt road which has eliminated the dust, pot-holes and mud in the rainy season. It’s a lot easier on the mechanics of all vehicles. There’s the odd lamppost casting light along the road, which makes driving at night a little safer. I still have a septic tank but electricity and telephone lines were here before I was. Perhaps the biggest change is that I now have city water, which brings me back to my well.

    Until city water arrived, the well had been my only source of water. I was told by someone who knew, that the well went down deep to reach water. I just know that when I look down, all I see is a circle of shining water winking back up at me.

    Built in a circular fashion from local stone, the wall around the well is about three feet high. It has two upright wooden beams holding a cross beam with a chain and bucket. You can turn the cross beam by a handle to lower or raise the bucket but I never had to use the bucket because an electric pump was installed to work automatically when the tap was turned on. As a result, I had long ago covered over the well with a fitted wooden lid and a handle. I hadn’t wanted to take
