Leaves In the Wind
()
About this ebook
Leaves move in the wind, delicate, fragile things. Leaves can break and disintegrate in those whirlwinds. Yet, a heavy wind can pick them up and cause momentary rushes so harsh one can not see, nor think, but only smell the rushing leaves and feel their brief power. Stories are like that, they can start out with a whisper and then rush through you like a wind. Top Writers Block offers five short stories and two poems on the theme "Leaves In The Wind."
Enjoy the talents of Melissa A. Szydlek, Elizabeth Rowan Keith, Tracey Howard, Suzy Stewart Dubot, and Alan Naylor. Your purchase of this ebook not only supports the creative outlets of independent authors, but also supports charity. Top Writers Block is an international group of writers who continue to donate all of their author proceeds to Sea Shepherd in France, an organization that devotes itself to preserving our seas and oceans and the life within.

Watching the people on the busy streets of Kumamoto did nothing to help Katie’s mood. She sat on the city bus and sneered at the people she passed, the shrines, the mountains, even at the ocean, which she loved so much. Rolling her eyes she turned away from the window and folded her arms across her chest. She huffed loudly. If she didn’t stay angry she’d give in to a sea of tears. Why did her stupid father have to move them here? Why couldn’t they have stayed in San Antonio? But no, her dad just couldn’t wait to move the family to the other side of the world, forcing her into a culture she couldn’t understand and didn’t fit into. Why couldn’t her dad work on the shopping malls and buildings and make all the deals and do whatever it was he did without making them leave Texas? She was so mad.
She hated Japan, she hated Kumamoto, she hated the International School she attended, and most of all she hated feeling so out of place and so alone. She wanted to go home. Lost in her thoughts, she closed her eyes. The bus screeched its brakes at the next stop and Katie heard the doors open. The sound of girls laughing filled the bus but Katie kept her eyes closed. The seating configuration on the bus was such that four seats formed a seating area where two seats faced two others in small cubes. Katie felt someone sit down in the seat next to her, and the laughter grew louder. She opened her eyes and saw four girls, three sitting in the seats around her and one standing. All of them were staring at her. They wore school uniforms from the local high school. One girl, the one sitting directly across from her, nudged Katie’s knee with the toe of her shoe.
"You! American girl! You go
