    Chapter 1 Inspector Strong’s Vacation

The weather in Seattle is the expected for late July. It will sprinkle only once every few days for an hour, might even skip three days but then rain hard for one day. The Sun is out every day, not all day but out. With few clouds, it is very pleasant. Everyone has mellowed out. So, the serious crimes are fewer, now. Why cause trouble when the weather is so nice outside.

The Homicide Division is in the valley of a slow week. By Wednesday, the nice weather has greatly reduced shootings. In the police department, it is time to clean house, repair the ceiling above Detective Rage's desk, and get out of the office on time.

Inspector Strong asks Detective Smith and Detective Rage to come into his office, I am taking a few days off, going out of town. Detective Smith will be acting. You may be assigned follow up on some cases for the rest of the division or take some time off yourself.

The Inspector oversees the Homicide Division in the police department. This is unusual; the division may have a Captain; usually it would be a Major. An Inspector is more like a Chief than either a Captain or a Major.

The Inspector’s name is Strong. Earl Strong, class of 1940, University of Texas. He was a Major in the Military Police. Early 60’s, stands about 5 feet 9 inches, weight 150 pounds, what hair he has is buzzed into a crew cut. Always with a green 1940’s felt hat, brim bent down in front. A cigar his Dr. says he can chew but not smoke.

Inspector Strong sits at the back of the room of the Chief’s meeting with his green hat on his lap, no one there has any problem with him in attendance. Chiefs are dressed in their fancy
