    Prologue

Janette Wanda Rage discovers Sunken Valley while out shooting on her father’s foothills part of the farm. She was just starting college in Idaho when she found the Valley. It got its name, Sunken Valley, from the Indians living nearby it, Janette and Little Joseph explored the Valley. Their findings and conclusions were never published and known to very few people. Little Joseph and Janette have been friends through the secondary schools and college; even though he is several years older.

Little Joseph is the son of the Tribal Chief Big Joseph, who is the son of the Chief Elder, Old Joseph.

The valley had no special name when Janette’s great grandfather built his first cabin there; it was called the old cabin. Janette’s grandmother Granny barely remembers being carried to a different new cabin by a large Indian with feathers in his hair. When in their new cabin, Janette’s great grandfather helped the Indians burn down the old cabin. No one has ever said why he did.

Janette’s father Fred, after the Valley was re-found, named, he deeded the Sunken Valley land over to the Tribe. The deeds were not filed for some reason, but the Tribe has been using the Sunken Valley for Spring and Fall rituals ever since.

    Chapter 1 Time Passes

It is now nine years later, and Little Joseph is rushing down the trail from the Sunken Valley after his twice-yearly visit to Sunken Valley to prepare for the tribe’s semiannual rituals. Little Joseph is the acting Chief because his father is in poor health. He must talk with Janette. She moved from Idaho to Seattle and is a Homicide Detective in Seattle."

He drives up to the Rage’s family’s farm. Her three older brothers are all married with their own families and homes on the farm. Knocking on the door, Granny, Janette’s grandmother, answers, Well, little Joe, it has been a long time. What can I do for you?
