I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

Commander John Hawkins sat before the panel of three military judges, awaiting his fate. Not that there was much in the way of doubt.

Commander Hawkins, General Atkins began. You have been found guilty of desertion. You did willfully vacate your post as Commander of Maltby Army Base and choose to go AWOL with, this woman.

Her name was Kate Shaw, Hawkins hissed, his jaw clutching so tightly it was beginning to cause a tension headache.

That as may be, Atkins snapped. But whatever the nature of your relationship with her, or her individual personal problems-

Like being stalked by an army of mad religious fanatics, Hawkins interrupted again.

Whatever her problems, they did not give you license to abandon your post without permission! Atkins snapped. Maltby Army Base was left without a proper CO. It took months to find an appropriate permanent replacement and your sudden departure, entirely without notice or warning of any kind, caused major morale problems in the meantime. Your conduct was inexcusable, Commander Hawkins, and yet you sit here and have the temerity to interrupt me and act like we are the ones in the wrong.

I did what I had to do, Hawkins said stubbornly.

And damn the consequences, Atkins nodded. Well, those consequences are here now, and they are very real. And you are going to have to live with them for the rest of your life.

Hawkins paled. You mean-

John Hawkins, Atkins intoned formally, you are hereby dishonourably discharged from the British Army. You will receive no severance pay or any other further form of financial remuneration or compensation. You will hand in your uniforms, your weapons and any and all forms of military identification. Hawkins swallowed. You are a fool, John, Atkins told him, his voice reeking of contempt. You were a rising star in the British Army. You had people on your side, people who went to extraordinary lengths to protect you from previous mistakes. Hawkins flinched at the reference. And for what? You reward them for their loyalty by throwing it back in their face. All over a woman, and all for nothing. You’re an idiot, John, and now you are out on your own.

In the living room of the little cottage currently being rented out by Maltby Army Base’s present CO, the beautiful Commander Fae Dupont, the blonde Frenchwoman was engaging in a coffee morning with Ian’s Gang’s Ian Williams and Emma Holmes, in what was becoming something of a tradition.

Your coffee is amazing, Fae, Emma took a sip and sighed in contentment.
