Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

Emma Holmes was running, faster than she’d ever run in her entire life. The nineteen year old thought her legs were going to give way underneath her but there was no way she could stop with the thing thundering after her.

Ian’s Gang had been called to Rawmarsh after reports of cattle being found completely drained of blood, followed by the discovery of a human corpse in much the same condition. They had found a colony of leech-like creatures, similar in size and shape but of extraordinary ferocity and speed. They had set about destroying the creatures, and then they had found their momma; the equivalent of a giant leech, around ten feet tall and with the width of an outhouse, with stubby little legs that nonetheless moved fast. A little too fast for Emma’s liking, given that this was the thing she was quite literally running for her life from.

    Emma! Ian yelled. "Get down!"

Uttering a barely coherent prayer, Emma obeyed her friend and leader, diving to the floor and covering her head with her hands.

    Now! Ian roared.

Steve unleashed the full volley of firepower from his favourite machine gun – which, Emma had been disturbed to learn, actually had a name, Esmeralda – that rendered the contributions of the guns of the rest of the gang almost irrelevant. Something wet, squelchy and foul-smelling drenched Emma. She cringed, fearing the worst. Then she heard Ian saying It’s alright, and he was there, taking her hand and helping her to her feet.

The giant leech-like thing was dead on the ground a few feet behind her – a little too close, she thought with a shudder – and she realized she was covered with a cocktail of the thing’s blood and blubber. Ew, gross! she complained.

Sean was scouting the area. Did we get them all?

    Wilburts nodded. It appears so.

"What were those things?!" Emma wanted to know.

Monsters, Matthew replied helpfully. But it’s alright, we got ‘em.

But what were they? Emma squawked. Where did they come from?!

    Who knows? Claire shrugged.

    Who cares? Matthew noted.

But, but don’t you want to know? Emma exclaimed. Aren’t you at least curious?

To be honest, Em, Ian clapped a friendly hand on her shoulder and then thought better of it, wiping it on his trousers.
