    The Keepers of the Lost

    Vanessa laughed, tasting the salty ocean. She jumped as a wave surged towards her, sliding onto the boogie board as she was propelled forward upon the shore. Vanessa loved the soft cushion of the warm sand beneath her feet and the serene sounds of the waves, seeming so gentle.  Still, she knew better than to underestimate the powerful force of the ocean.   Vanessa spent every summer on the beautiful east coast, and for her, a Midwesterner, beaches were a luxury.

    Entranced by the enchantment of the ocean, Vanessa swam farther out, oblivious to her parents’ calls of warning.

    Vanessa! Swim back! You’re too far out! her father exclaimed.

    She desperately tried to remember what her parents had told her to do if she was caught in a riptide, her current situation.   She swam to the side, away from the pile of rocks revealing itself as the culprit. The angle created by the rocks caused a current. She had swum closer and closer to the rocks, not noticing as she approached them.

    Eventually Vanessa could only hear the terrified commands of her family,
