    Countdown to Samhain

Samhain is the end of the bright living part of the year and the beginning of the dark, dead, cold winter. This is a time when people would slaughter animals to put up meat for winter and prepare for the long nights ahead.

Samhain was a time of ritual. Bonfires would be kindled to bring warmth and light to a darkening world and people would huddle together in fear of what lurked in the darkness. The doors to the other world would fly open and the souls of the dead, and other beings as well, would creep through into our world.

We now call it Halloween and have attempted to purge the terror from the day, but the denizens of the other worlds will have none of that. Samhain is forever a time of darkness before light, cold before warmth; it remains a day for the dead and the unnatural to visit us and remind us who truly rules.

I bring you a countdown, ten days to prepare your mind for the horrors of the season. Ten stories to place your mind in the proper state to either embrace the darkness or stand against it.

So light your fires stock your larder and prepare for Samhain.

    The Sea Beast

W ake up sleepy man , the fish Massak was about to spear suddenly said to him.

    Whuzzah? he mumbled

Wake up! I want to go fishing.

Massak was very confused. Not only was the fish speaking to him but it sounded just like his betrothed, Akna.

Up! Akna the fish shouted and Massak was suddenly propelled into wakefulness as his sleeping furs were ripped from his bed and cold air slapped his bare skin.

Opening his right eye by a mere crack he instantly regretted the decision as a shaft of sunlight speared his face through a small chink in the roof of the mud brick hut. He really must fix that before the rains came.

Are you coming fishing or not? Akna looked down on him, haughty disdain belied by her mischievous grin.

Realizing his nakedness and the proximity of the woman he loved Massak came fully awake.

How about joining me in my boat and we go fishing later? he patted the bed, rolling onto his back to better display himself.

You keep your spear to yourself, Akna laughed.

She kicked the covers back over his manhood.

You promised me a fishing trip today. If you’re not getting up, I’m going with Sesi.

Fine, Massak pouted pulling the sleeping furs higher. You girls go fish. I’m going back to bed.

With an exasperated snort, Akna left the small hut muttering about the inherent laziness of men.

I take it he’s not coming?

Sesi was not at all surprised as her friend exited the hut alone.

The mighty fisherman would prefer to sleep, Akna laughed. I swear, if it weren’t for us women, the village would starve. Men just want to sleep.

    And make babies. Sesi added.

Can you believe it? He actually tried seducing me. Well Massak can wait for that until the wedding now. He promised me this fishing trip for a week. If he wants to deprive me of that, I’ll deprive him of this. Akna waved her hands down her trim body.

Both girls broke into giggles and ran toward the rocky shore mere yards from the edge of their small fishing village.

Good morning girls, waved Tupilek, the village wise man from where he knelt at the edge of the lapping waves making his morning prayers to the Goddess.

    Morning, shouted Sesi.

Pray for some fish, added Akna as the two girls lifted
