Description

Dr. Rob and Tami explain to the listeners how addiction has ripple effects on family dynamics. Many addicts think they’re great parents to their children, but that could not be further from the truth. If you’re not a great partner to your spouse, you are causing ripples of trauma not only in the way they show up but in the way your children are parented. Dr. Rob and Tami explain how addiction affects more than just the addict in this week’s episode.   TAKEAWAYS: [:30] How does sex addiction affect the family and their entire lives? [1:30] If you’re not present, available, and supportive of your partner, then they’re not able to be the best parent. [4:00] Recovery heals everyone involved. The addict and the entire family. [4:50] I’ve got a problem setting a bottom-line boundary with my addict. I’m being manipulated but what can I do? [6:30] You should not edit or suppress your feelings just so you can make someone else feel okay. [9:40] Addicts are often too narcissistic to actually attempt suicide. However, if they really are suicidal, then they need residential treatment. [11:00] How does the Internal Family System benefit the sex addict? [13:40] What is the definition of abuse? Isn’t it abusive to cheat on your partner? [18:40] You have to have a therapist that knows him/herself. If they don’t, they’re going to play out their own trauma onto their clients. [19:00] My wife wants perfection while I’m on this recovery journey. What should I do?   RESOURCES: Seekingintegrity.com Email Tami: Tami@Seekingintegrity.com Sexandrelationshiphealing.com Intherooms.com Out of the Doghouse: A Step-by-Step Relationship-Saving Guide for Men Caught Cheating, by Robert Weiss Prodependence: Moving Beyond Codependency, by Robert Weiss Sex Addiction 101: A Basic Guide to Healing from Sex, Porn, and Love Addiction, by Robert Weiss Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men, by Robert Weiss
