    THE THOUGHT OF ÈMILE DURKHEIM

I- The historical context, biographical aspects and philosophical background of Durkheim's thought

Durkheim proposed to collaborate in the consolidation of republican institutions and democracy, from a secular point of view.

He was born in 1858 in Lorraine, a French town near the German border and one of the areas most affected by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

DURKHEIM WAS CONCERNED BY THE MORAL FRAGMENTATION AND LACK OF SOCIAL SOLIDARITY THAT HE OBSERVED IN THE SOCIETY OF HIS TIME

Unlike England, FRANCE EXPERIENCED since the revolution of 1789, A CENTURY OF POLITICAL CRISIS AND SOCIAL CONVULSIONS. During the Second Empire, under the leadership of Napoleon III or Luis Bonaparte, a new crisis arose, derived from the defeat in the war with Prussia.

Napoleon III was arrested and the republican deputies overthrew the empire, establishing a provisional government. The situation was very unstable, which led to a popular government in the capital: the Paris Commune, a revolutionary experience bloodily suppressed two months later, and which ended with the establishment of the Third Republic, a conservative parliamentary democracy that would last until Nazi occupation in 1940.

Some episodes of social disintegration (unjust accusation of treason against the Jewish captain Dreyfus in 1894, assassination of President Sadi Carnot by an anarchist in the same year, foundation of a monarchical restoration movement with nationalist and anti-Semitic roots, French Action, in 1898 ) reaffirmed Durkheim's conviction that UNITY WAS LACK IN THE THIRD REPUBLIC. Strong social changes (industrialization, exacerbation of the class struggle), added to the political crises, (...) had overthrown traditional values, norms and institutions without replacing them with others that fulfilled their integrating and cohesive function (...)

He returned to France in 1887 and took over the first chair in Sociology. In 1893 he published his doctoral thesis, The Rules of Sociological Method, in 1897 he wrote Suicide, and in 1912, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life.

DURKHEIM IS THE MAIN EXPONENT OF THE FRENCH SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY AND ONE OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THIS DISCIPLINE

DURKHEIM DECLARED A FOLLOWER OF POSITIVE THINKERS LIKE SAINT-SIMON AND COMTE, from whom he rescues his readings on the passage from feudalism to modern society, in terms of European institutional and moral decadence. He also adheres to the proposal of an organicist social integration and social collaboration.

SOCIAL MORALITY IS AN ELEMENT THAT UNIFIES AND CONVERTS A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS INTO A SOCIETY

Another author he relies on is the German Albert Schäffle (1831-1903), from whom he takes organic analogies and biological metaphors to understand the elements that make up the social structure.
