    BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY

    Contextualizing the beginnings of behaviorism

BEHAVIORAL OR BEHAVIORALISM EMERGED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY IN THE US, at a time when it is that country, there were DEEP REFORMS in the economy, industry and commerce, and millions of immigrants arrived. This, together with the advent of the World War I (1914-1918) generated the NEED FOR A PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY THAT PREDICATES AND CONTROLS HUMAN BEHAVIORS, to adapt individuals to a society in transformation.

    Positivism

Behaviorism adopted the science model of positivism, initiated by Augusto Comte in the first decades of the 19th century.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PSYCHOLOGISTS OF THE TIME WAS TO ACHIEVE THAT PSYCHOLOGY HAD OBJECTIVITY CRITERIA ANALOGUE TO THOSE OF THE NATURAL SCIENCES

    THREE CENTRAL PRINCIPLES OF POSITIVISM

 PHENOMENALISM  can only be the object of scientific knowledge that which is directly accessible through sensory experience

 NOMINALISM  the language of science should not speak of abstract and universal entities but of external, particular and individual objects

 SCIENCE UNIT  the only valid method to access scientific knowledge is the natural sciences

    Pragmatism

PRAGMATISM AFFIRMS THAT AN IDEA SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN IT HAS ANY PRACTICAL EFFECT: THE TRUTH OF AN IDEA DEPENDS ON ITS PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCES

IN THE CASE OF SCIENCE, a scientific hypothesis is true when it is useful to explain a phenomenon, an idea in which we can see the INFLUENCE OF EVOLUTIONISM, since only the ideas that, according to their practical applicability, are better adapted survive, abandoning the rest.

Studies of ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY are a fundamental antecedent of behaviorism. Thus, in his laboratory, Edgard L. THORNDIKE enclosed animals in problem boxes or cages, of which they could only get out in one way (by pressing a button, moving a lever, etc.). The animal, through many trial and error tests, opened the mechanism and got its reward (for example, food).

The results of his experiments were generalized in two LAWS:

 LAW OF EFFECT  When the response to a stimulus is followed by an effect or satisfaction factor, the stimulus-response connection is reinforced. Conversely, when the response is followed by a disturbing effect or factor, that connection is weakened

 LAW OF EXERCISE  Practice in learning, repetition, strength and duration of stimulus-response schemes stands out, although this always depends on the law of effect

    Watson. Classical behaviorism

It is John Broadus WATSON who TRANSFERS THE PROCEDURES APPLIED IN ANIMALS TO THE STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR, stating
