OUTSTANDING SCHOOLS IN SEMIOTICS
INTRODUCTION TO PEIRCE AND SAUSSURE
Peirce drew on the philosophical and logical developments of Descartes, Leibniz, and Kant. He wanted to found semiotics as a theory of knowledge based on algebra and that was the basis of all sciences.
At the same time, in the late nineteenth century, Saussure developed semiotics as a project dependent on psychology, which would serve to explain aspects of linguistic behavior.
Both approaches differ in terms of the purpose of the proposal and, fundamentally, in terms of the conception of sign: Saussure raised semiotics only in terms of what would serve to support linguistics, which was the subject of his interest and would develop then a provisional definition of a linguistic sign, which is dyadic -meaning / significant-.
Peirce intends to put together a science of all sciences based on a real -dynamic- process called semiosis, which is the triadic sign formed by sign / object / interpreter. The Peircean sign appears better founded from the point of view of logic, since the Saussurean always presents the problem of how to locate the referent of the sign (which would be a third element). However, they both agree that there are no thoughts without signs, and they also agree on the principle of the difference and opposition between signs.
Peirce's followers established a triad of disciplines: the sign in relation to others forms the SYNTAX; in relation to objects, SEMANTICS, and in relation to the people who use them, PRAGMATICS. In our days, this classification has been perfected through communication theories, new formalisms, its contact with linguistics, anthropology, psychology, art.
THE STRUCTURAL PERSPECTIVE
BASIC ELEMENTS IN THE SAUSSURE THEORY
Subject and task of linguistics
Ferdinand de Saussure was a professor at the University of Geneva for three years; The General Linguistics Course is a reconstruction made by his disciples from his class notes.
Saussurean thought is strongly marked by its epistemological orientation, POSITIVISM; This will be reflected in his desire to make linguistics a science that follows the model of the exact and natural sciences, and will also be reflected in the concern to define the object of study of the discipline.
LINGUISTICS will have as its subject ALL MANIFESTATIONS OF HUMAN LANGUAGE.
FUNCTIONS OF LINGUISTICS
Carry out the description and history of all languages (diachronic movement)
Find the constant forces that operate universally in all languages and obtain the general laws that explain the phenomena of history (synchronous movement)
Detach and define herself
THE PLACE OF LINGUISTICS within the sciences is within semiotics (a general science of signs), which in turn is a branch of social psychology, which in turn is framed within general psychology.
THE LANGUAGE, ITS DEFINITION
Many sciences already have their specific object of study defined in advance, such as sociology and economics; On the other hand, in the field of language it is not clear which is the object to study, given its heterogeneity.
The linguistic phenomenon is crossed by different dichotomies: the acoustic impression (mental imprint of the sound) would not exist without the vocal cords that make them that sound; sound, in turn, is the medium for transmitting an idea that is associated with the acoustic footprint; in another order, it is social since we all use it as a means of communication but, at the same time, it is individual because each person, when using it, adds their own nuances and finally language is, at the same time, a current system or institution and it has an evolution, a history.
Saussure needs to cut it out and for this he is going to place himself from a perspective; this is why he says that IT IS THE POINT OF VIEW THAT CREATES THE OBJECT.
And the place where he stands is in the field of language, since he considers it as the only thing capable of being defined independently.
LANGUAGE CHARACTERISTICS
multiform and heteroclite
physical, physiological and psychic
individual and social
SAUSSURE UNDERSTANDS by LANGUAGE what is given to us by nature, a faculty belonging to all human beings.
The LANGUAGE, on the other hand, is something that we learn, it is acquired. To find his place, Saussure proposes to place himself before the individual act, where A and B are two people. When A wants to talk to B, a process is carried out in the mind of the speaker by which a concept is linked to a certain acoustic image (psychic phenomenon). The brain gives the order for phonation to occur (physiological phenomenon), which produces sound waves that reach the ear of listener B (physical phenomenon).
The circuit is repeated in reverse:
TO
B
CONCEPT
IMAGE
Acoustics
CONCEPT
IMAGE
Acoustics
WITHIN THIS CIRCUIT, the language is located in the mental, psychic association of a concept with an acoustic image. Language, says Saussure, is a treasure deposited by the practice of speech in subjects belonging to the same linguistic community.
LANGUAGE IS A GRAMMATICAL SYSTEM WHICH IS NOT COMPLETE IN ANY INDIVIDUAL'S MIND, BUT CAN ONLY BE FOUND COMPLETE IN THE WHOLE COMMUNITY
SAUSSURE PROPOSES, then, to distinguish the language of what is execution or speech of a person, since this is accidental and accidental.
LANGUAGE = LANGUAGE + SPEAK
