FROM TRANSCULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY TO SECOND PSYCHOLOGY
Wundt said that the application of the methods of the natural sciences to human behavior is only recommended to study the most basic, universal and therefore TIMELESS aspects. FROM TRANSCULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY TO SECOND PSYCHOLOGY

Wundt said that the application of the methods of the natural sciences to human behavior is only recommended to study the most basic, universal and therefore TIMELESS aspects. This is because all other aspects of human behavior are influenced by culture, which is not timeless but essentially historical.

WUNDT SAID THAT GENETIC METHODS ARE ESSENTIAL TO STUDY SUPERIOR PROCESSES, BECAUSE THEY INVOLVE CULTURE IN THEIR CONSTITUTION (EPOCAL AND LOCAL: THE ENVIRONMENT)

This is the typical objection currently made to CROSS-CULTURAL RESEARCH OR FIRST PSYCHOLOGY.

The cross-cultural experimental studies of the last hundred years can refute ethnocentric conclusions. The studied people present general cognitive deficits as an effect of a backward culture. But they have several flaws:

They cannot provide a good positive explanation of the role that culture plays in mental life.

They are a somewhat sterile guide to practice

    Rethinking the two [Wundt's] psychologies

Like any social science, psychology is highly divided. In the 1960s and 1970s, both cross-cultural psychology and cognitive psychology grew.

THE CENTRAL METAPHOR OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY: A PERSON IS LIKE A COMPUTER THAT PROCESSES INFORMATION (RECEIVES AN INPUT OR STIMULUS, AND PRODUCES AN OUTPUT OR RESPONSE)

Cognitive psychology followed the methods of METHODOLOGICAL BEHAVIOURISM, with the only modification that what mediates between stimulus and response is now a more complex structure.

BOTH COGNITIVE SCIENCE AND COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY FOLLOWED THE TRADITION OF EARLY PSYCHOLOGY

Bruner, a founder of cognitive studies, recognizes that when these disciplines were born what was intended was an extension of behaviorism (first psychology). This author fears that "the reduction of the cognitive to the physiological DEHUMANIZES the concept of mind.

    COGNITIVE SCIENCE (INTERDISCIPLINARITY BETWEEN):

     NEUROSCIENCE

     BEHAVIORAL SOCIAL SCIENCES

     COMPUTER SCIENCE

     ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

This interdiscipline is the reaction against the division of labor within the social sciences (a problem that isolated the results of the different investigations, thus limiting their fertility).

    CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY:

 THE EXPRESSION OF THE SECOND PSYCHOLOGY AT THE END OF THE 20TH CENTURY

 AFFIRMS THAT CULTURE MODELS THE INDIVIDUAL WITH THE SAME INTENSITY WITH WHICH BIOLOGY MODELS THEM

    Views of cultural psychology

The basic agreements that give rise to this discipline:

 THERE IS A LIMIT TO THE HYPOTHESES THAT CAN BE OBTAINED FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS

 CULTURAL CONTEXT IS AN INTEGRAL
