()
About this ebook
We have summarized and briefly addressed in this work the essential aspects of his thinking.
Pablo García argues that what distinguishes Hegel's philosophy is that, having received the influence of the past, it makes it a subject for reflection. This philosopher elaborates a philosophical system synthesizing the elements of the previous philosophies. Contemporary philosophy is largely a development of Hegelian philosophy.

PHILOSOPHY NOTES: HEGEL
Pablo GARCÍA
WHAT DISTINGUISHES Hegel's philosophy is that, having been influenced by the past, it makes it a subject for reflection. This philosopher elaborates a philosophical system synthesizing the elements of the previous philosophies.
Contemporary philosophy is largely a development of Hegelian philosophy.
Life and work
- 1770: he was born in Stuttgart (Germany). That same year Kant publishes a Dissertation, in which he begins to develop his ideas about knowledge
-! 788: enter the Tübingen theological seminary. He befriends Hölderlin (poet) and Schelling (philosopher). The Critique of Practical Reason appears, Kant's second important work.
- 1789: the French Revolution occurs, which influences German intellectuals.
The period that begins is comparable, for its wealth, only with Classical Greece. It is the era of Napoleon, the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Goethe publishes the Werther and the Faust. In philosophy German idealism develops, whose main figures are Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel himself.
-1806: in Jena publishes his first important work, the Phenomenology of the Spirit
- 1812: the Science of Logic appears
- 1821: in Berlin publishes the Philosophy of Law. Hegel is at the height of his prestige
- 1831: dies during a cholera epidemic
After his death the Philosophy of History, Aesthetics, the History of philosophy and the Philosophy of religions appear, notes of his classes taken by his disciples.
The Phenomenology of the Spirit was considered by Hegel as an introduction to his system, which is later articulated in three moments:
science of logic
philosophy of nature
philosophy of spirit
START PROBLEM
With regard to the problem of where philosophy should begin, two opposing positions arise:
Enlightenment: it must be based on a critique of the faculty of knowledge, as Kant does in the Critique of Pure Reason. After making this criticism, Kant concludes that reason cannot know the absolute. The only possibility of knowledge for man is enclosed in the limits of experience.
For Hegel, this position is contradictory, since it can only be known by knowing, in the same way that we can only swim in water. Furthermore, if we consider knowledge as an instrument, it may be that the result is modified by that instrument used; it will always be finite knowledge.
Romanticism: philosophy begins with the feeling or intuition, which allows us immediate access to the absolute. This is the position of Schelling, for whom phenomenal knowledge is not true. For Hegel, this knowledge is arbitrary (any content is valid) and capricious (it is personal).
Hegel maintains that Enlightenment and Romanticism have a point in common: they both separate phenomenal knowledge from absolute knowledge. He tries to overcome both points of view, arguing that knowledge begins at an abstract level and reaches absolute knowledge at the end of
