COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
The PROGRAM of COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY is to produce a NEW PARADIGM that DISPLACES BEHAVIOR. The latter school had been hegemonic for a decade in American psychology.
Those who later formed cognitive psychology thought that ASSOCIATIONISM AND BEHAVIORAL EMPIRISM COULD NOT UNDERSTAND COMPLEX HUMAN BEHAVIORS.
The foundation of this current of psychology is given from the appearance of "COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY" by ULRIC NEISSER. Cognitive psychology and cognitive science

COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY LOCATES MENTAL PHENOMENA AS CAUSAL AGENTS OF BEHAVIOR

COGNITIVIST SCIENTISTS try to UNDERSTAND WHAT IS KNOWN (people objects, etc.) and the PERSON who performs an act of knowledge (through the perception apparatus, memory, learning, etc.). The MODES OF REPRESENTATION (image, form, words, concepts, etc.) also occupy an important place within the objects of knowledge of cognitive science.

COGNITIVE SCIENCE is born from the INTERSECTION OF DISCIPLINES. A cognitivist scientist, HOWARD GARDNER considers that these sciences have FIVE CHARACTERISTICS:

    • Cognitivism considers MENTAL REPRESENTATIONS as a LEVEL OF ANALYSIS DIFFERENT FROM THE BIOLOGICAL OR THE HISTORICAL-SOCIAL

    • For UNDERSTANDING THE MIND, ANALOGY WITH THE electronic COMPUTER is essential. This is the most viable model to understand the mind

    • The influence of affects or, on the other hand, cultural, historical or social conditions is deliberately left aside because it would complicate scientific research

    • PROBLEMS OF COGNITIVISM have a long history in Western philosophy, even going back to the Greeks

    • Cognitivism understands that INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES are of great UTILITY

    Theoretical matrix of Cognitive Science

    1. Symposium The brain mechanisms of behavior

Gardner dates in September 1948 the event thanks to which the problems that led to the first outlines of the cognitivist position began to arise. It was at a symposium on The brain mechanisms of behavior. The aim of the symposium was to discuss the ways in which the nervous system controls behavior.

It was there that the ANALOGY BETWEEN THE COMPUTER AND THE MIND was first raised. It was through the mathematician JOHN VON NEUMANN.

WARREN Mc CULLOCH, mathematician and neurophysiologist, raised a discussion about how THE BRAIN PROCESSES INFORMATION. Mc Culloch's proposal was
