1. INTRODUCTION
For modern epistemology, to know is to represent internally and exactly what is outside the mind. This means that the human mind is like a mirror and that there is an external reality independent of us. This idea that our beliefs are copies of external reality is known as REPRESENTATIONISM.
Representationism presents some questionable points (questions of the type: How to know if a representation is an adequate copy of reality. Richard Rorty suggests that the problem with representationalism lies in its attempt to reach a definitive foundation of knowledge. IT CRITICIZES THE POSSIBILITY OF A FOUNDATIONISM AND INVITES TO ABANDON THE MODERN EPISTEMOLOGICAL VOCABULARY.

BEYOND EPISTEMOLOGY: CONTINGENCY, IRONY AND CONVERSATION
1. INTRODUCTION
For modern epistemology, to know is to represent internally and exactly what is outside the mind. This means that the human mind is like a mirror and that there is an external reality independent of us. This idea that our beliefs are copies of external reality is known as REPRESENTATIONISM.
Representationism presents some questionable points (questions of the type: How to know if a representation is an adequate copy of reality?).
2. THE PROBLEM OF REPRESENTATION
The metaphor of the mind as nature's mirror
is inspired by a Greek eye analogy, according to which the mind's eye acts in a similar way to the physical eye. The latter perceives the contingent world of physical forms, while the former knows the true reality of things. There is then a distinction between types of knowledge: contingent knowledge and necessary knowledge.
The modern metaphor of the mind as a mirror of nature
preserves this idea that the mind can faithfully reflect realities, which results in a SPECTATOR THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE.
Rorty mentions three modern philosophers as referents of this theory:
1. DESCARTES, with the turn towards interiority and the invention of the mind as a privileged internal sphere. DUALISTIC CONCEPTION OF THE UNIVERSE: THE SUBJECT THAT KNOWS AND REALITY AS OPPOSED POLES. The testimonial signal of the fidelity of the ideas is their indubitable character, since the mental is known in a direct and indubitable way; while we only access the physical through its manifestations in the mind.
2. LOCKE, who confuses the process of causal explanation of the operations of the mind (knowledge of
) and the process of justification of knowledge (knowledge that
). In his opinion, knowledge is identity with the object and not true judgment about the object, so he thinks that knowledge is justified when it only explains how he got it.
3. KANT, with his Copernican twist. According to his proposal, the object of knowledge is not only what we receive from experience, but a composite of what we receive from experience and what the faculties of human knowledge (sensitivity and understanding) provide.
Kant makes a significant advance in the consideration of knowledge as knowledge of propositions (not of
