    CONFORMITY AND OBEDIENCE

On many occasions it can be observed that when INDIVIDUALS find themselves with the unanimous opposition of a group of equals, they ARE PRESENTED WITH THE CONFLICT OF ACTING ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN CONVICTIONS OR ADOPT THE RULES ACCEPTED BY THE REST OF THE GROUP and, commonly, THEY RESOLVE CONFORMING TO THE GROUP; The conflict can also arise when having to obey the orders of someone who is considered a legitimate authority.

CONFORMITY IS THE CHANGE OF INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR IN ACCORDANCE WITH GROUP BEHAVIOR. IN THE SAME WAY, WHEN INDIVIDUALS CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOR BY SUBMITTING TO THE DIRECTIVES OF A LEGITIMATE AUTHORITY, THAT IS CALLED OBEDIENCE

BOTH TYPES OF INFLUENCE are differentiated by status: IN CONFORMITY ALL SUBJECTS HAVE THE SAME STATUS, WHILE IN OBEDIENCE THE DEMANDING SUBJECT HAS A GREATER HIERARCHICAL STATUS; In addition, in the latter, the subject of authority wants to influence someone and monitor compliance with her mandates.

On the other hand, in conformity, the group may not know of the existence of the subject (which conforms to its idea); Finally, the behavior of the person who conforms is similar to that of the influence source, while in the other relationship it is clearly different.

In this sense, the DISTINCTION BETWEEN PUBLIC AGREEMENT AND PRIVATE AGREEMENT is also important, the first is the submission that implies conformity to the group, while the second is the particular acceptance that can come to oppose the public position.

    The first investigations on conformity

In the 1950s, the American researcher Asch carried out conformity experiments in laboratories and found that A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE GAVE WRONG ANSWERS DUE TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE GROUP (made up of people who deliberately pressed), while the percentage was very low in the group. case of private answers, without group pressure. Later, Crutchfield exchanged the accomplices for electrical signals.

    Factors Influencing Compliance

    • INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS: the most important for conformity seem to be NATIONALITY AND SEX. The first
