American Dirt is the story of the protagonist Lydia Quixano Pérez and her survival spirit. Lydia lives with her family in Mexico's Acapulco. She lives in the town with her husband Sebastian and her son Luca. Luca is an eight-year-old kid who shares a strong bond with his mother. She owns a bookshop in downtown Acapulco and stocks the store with her favorite books. Though the town is not so keen towards reading books, she keeps up with her charade of finding readers who love books as much as she does.

The books are accumulating dust on the shelves, and the possibility of someone appreciating their beauty and wisdom seems bleak to her. She is also largely unaffected by the growing menace of a drug cartel in the town that is threatening to disrupt the lives of the common
