About this ebook

The Giver of Stars: A Novel by Jojo Moyes: Conversation Starters

The Giver of Stars, Jojo Moyes’ newest novel tells us a story of five women who break all societal stereotypes and work towards their mission of educating the poor and underprivileged people of Kentucky. The book is inspired by the true story of the horsepack librarians which was an initiative by the Works Progress Administration in the year 1930. The book depicts the same year when America was battling depression and details the arduous pursuit of the library’s mission of providing literacy and education to the remote and poverty-ridden areas of Eastern Kentucky and of the bond of love and friendship between the women librarians. The book was a #1 NY Times Bestseller and is even slated to become a major motion picture.

    Introducing The Giver of Stars

The Giver of Stars is a historical fiction novel by author Jojo Moyes. The story is set in the 1930s. It depicts the Depression ridden American state Kentucky through the eyes of women who have buckled up to save it from its sorry state, quite literally.

The young protagonist of the novel is a lady called Alice Wright. Alice has been living a dull and somewhat stifling life in England. She is looking to leave the pale life behind, and so when an opportunity shows up to move out from England, she naturally jumps at it. An attractive and handsome man called Bennett Van Cleve arrives in her life to marry her and take her to an exciting new world in Baileyville, Kentucky.

They get married shortly after and settle down in Baileyville. However, all her hopes and dreams of living an exciting life come crashing down when she realizes that Bennett is hardly interested in her or their marriage. They live in his mansion, along with his father. Alice begins to live her life with nothing exciting to look forward to. Her father-in-law continues to harrow her, making her feel claustrophobic even in the giant house. Bennett doesn’t show any signs of intimacy, nor does he take a stand for her against his father. She’s just about to get accustomed to monotony when yet another opportunity presents itself in the form of traveling horseback library-popularly known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. The library is an initiative and brainchild of Eleanor Roosevelt, who has sought and found a way to tackle the ill-effects of Depression by providing books to the poor section of the society. She aims to provide literacy and reading to the poor residents of the state that don’t see a
