THE INTERPRETATION OF CULTURES

RELIGION AS A CULTURAL SYSTEM

I. In the anthropological works on religion carried out after the Second World War, we find two characteristics: a) that no great theoretical progress has been made, but that the conceptual of the predecessors has been exploited, adding very little and, b) they rest on a well-defined and restricted intellectual tradition (Durkheim, Weber, Freud, Malinowski). But it does not occur to anyone to look elsewhere, such as in philosophy, history, law, literature or the "harder" sciences, for analytical ideas.

But it does not occur to anyone to look elsewhere, such as in philosophy, history, law, literature or the harder sciences, for analytical ideas.

If the anthropological study of religion is in a state of general stagnation, it is unlikely that it can get going again with minor variations on classical theoretical themes. But a closer examination of the issues considered and expressed in well-established propositions may show that anthropologists are dedicated to proving the indubitable. This solemn way of reproducing what the accepted masters did is called academicism. Only if we address problems obscure enough for us to discover something, can we hope to accomplish a work that is not a reissue of the great men of the first quarter of this century, but lives up to them. The way to do this is by extending the established traditions of social anthropology, such as Durkheim's discussion of the nature of the sacred, Weber's Verstehen methodology, Freud's parallel between personal and collective rituals, and Malinowski's inquiry into the distinction between religion and common sense. These are all unavoidable starting points for any useful anthropological theory of religion. To broaden the conceptual framework one can move in many directions. Here we will deal with the cultural dimension of religious analysis. Culture, denotes a historically transmitted scheme of meanings represented in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions and expressed in symbolic forms by means with which men communicate, perpetuate and develop their knowledge and their attitudes towards life.

II. Sacred symbols have the function of synthesizing the ethos of a people (tone, character, quality of life, moral and aesthetic style) and its worldview. In religious belief and practice, a group's ethos is made intellectually reasonable by being portrayed as representing a lifestyle ideally suited to the state of affairs described by the worldview, while the worldview is made emotionally compelling by being presented as a image of things well arranged to accommodate such a lifestyle. This, on the one hand, objectifies moral and aesthetic preferences and, on the other hand, lends support to these beliefs about the world by invoking deeply felt moral and aesthetic sentiments as experienced evidence of their truth. Religion is 1) A system of symbols that works to 2) establish strong, pervasive, and lasting moods and motivations in men, 3) formulate conceptions of a general order of existence, and 4) clothe these conceptions with an aura of effectiveness. ) such that moods and motivations appear uniquely realistic

To the symbol we assign tremendous weight. Here we use it to designate any object, act, fact, quality or relationship that serves as a vehicle for a conception, the conception being the
