THE SOCIOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE AND SCIENCE
INTRODUCTION: KNOWLEDGE, INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY

CHAPTER 5 SCIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY

A. The three dimensions of science

Science is a set of knowledge already contrasted, that is, already tested, and presumably true. But it is also a systematic way of generating new knowledge and an activity that is carried out constantly and routinely through a method and through the use of material and human resources. Therefore, IN SCIENCE THE FOLLOWING THREE DIMENSIONS MUST BE DISTINGUISHED:

1) The INDUCTIVE-DEDUCTIVE METHOD, which serves to guarantee the refutation of knowledge and is the filter of truth.
2) The RESOURCES MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE, science as a social institution formed by organized workers and with certain material and economic resources.
3) Finally, SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION, the body of knowledge considered certain, including the dissemination of scientific knowledge (ethnoscience) and the dissemination of technical knowledge (ethnotechnical).

    A. The three dimensions of science

Science is a set of knowledge already contrasted, that is, already tested, and presumably true. 3) Finally, SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION, the body of knowledge considered certain, including the dissemination of scientific knowledge (ethnoscience) and the dissemination of technical knowledge (ethnotechnical).

The characteristic of Western culture lies in science in its active sense. ONLY THE WEST HAS DEVELOPED SCIENCE AS A GENERALIZED ANXIETY TO KNOW MORE AND MORE and to systematically and constantly acquire new knowledge. Its importance allows us to speak of modern societies as knowledge societies.

    B. Science as an occupation: the institution of science

Science as an institution is a recent activity, the result of the transition from small science, developed by socially isolated pioneers, to the current big science, which employs a growing number of workers. Today, the effects of science on social structure are of interest. And firstly, the appearance of a new economic activity, research and development (R&D), within the services sector.

The current societies are oriented to the production of new knowledge in the same way that the previous ones were oriented to the production of the means of subsistence. TODAY THERE IS A CLOSE CONNECTION BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND INDUSTRY.

Science employs more and more workers, so science is, for many people, just another job. The volume of jobs linked to science has grown enormously since the sixties: in universities, in laboratories, in study centers, in high-tech companies.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY, THE HIERARCHY OF KNOWLEDGE TENDS TO BECOME THE CENTRAL CRITERION OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION

POST-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETIES are educated societies, hence the interest they attach to universal schooling. THE DISTRIBUTION OF KNOWLEDGE AND KNOWLEDGE TEND
