About this ebook

We have summarized here the essential of this book by the author.

Marxism is a current of thought that was raised by Marx, however, despite what it may seem from the outside, it is not a unified current, which means that THERE ARE MULTIPLE MARXISMS, all with different characteristics and with a great disagreement between they.
This text explores the question of the state in accordance with Marx's political thought, paying little attention to the writings of his friend Engels and without considering what the Marxists, who have multiple interpretations of Marx's work, have said later.
Marx did not write any book on the theory of the state, so it is sometimes difficult to understand his positions on the matter. However, his first work was a critique of political law that Hegel maintained, and there, as in the "Economic-Philosophical Manuscripts" of 1844, we can find some of Marx's key points.

NEITHER FOR MARX NOR AGAINST MARX

CHAPTER 7  MARX & THE STATE

Marx and the problem of the state

Marxism is a current of thought that was raised by Marx, however, despite what it may seem from the outside, it is not a unified current, which means that THERE ARE MULTIPLE MARXISMS, all with different characteristics and with a great disagreement between they.

This text explores the question of the state in accordance with Marx's political thought, paying little attention to the writings of his friend Engels and without considering what the Marxists, who have multiple interpretations of Marx's work, have said later.

Marx did not write any book on the theory of the state, so it is sometimes difficult to understand his positions on the matter. However, his first work was a critique of political law that Hegel maintained, and there, as in the Economic-Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, we can find some of Marx's key points.

We are going to take five points that are going to order the exposition of how Marx saw the State:

    1. Criticism of the theories before him, especially that of Hegel.

    2. General theory of the State

    3. Theory of the bourgeois state in particular

    4. Theory of the transition state

    5. Theory of the extinction of the State

The critique of Hegelian political philosophy

In Western philosophy there was an idea that HEGEL carried to its ultimate consequences. According to this idea, the State is the rational form of man's social existence because it is the one who guarantees order and is an impartial arbiter above the parties, as Hobbes saw it, or a representative of the general will as Rousseau proposed.

The criticism of Marx, is going to be inspired by the proposals of a German philosopher called Feuerbach, and has a deeply philosophical and methodological character rather than political. Marx says that Hegel considers as predicate what should be the subject and as subject what should be predicated.

Hegel says: The sovereignty of the State is the monarch, and for Marx this is very speculative because it starts from a subject: sovereignty, which is abstract and from there goes to the concrete reality represented by the monarch that would be the predicate. Instead Marx proposes another phrase to think about
