    4. Man: social or political animal

    All human activities are conditioned to the fact of coexistence; there is no animal laborans , who inhabits a world inhabited only by himself, but human action depends on the presence of others, this being the sense of the primitive translation of the Aristotelian zoon politikon , which implied an animal socialis.

    As St. Thomas said: man is political by nature, that is, social. For the Greeks, man's capacity for political organization is opposed to the natural association whose center is the family and the home.

    To be political is to live in the polis, where everything is based not on action, linked to force and violence, but on discourse, speech and persuasion. In Aristotle's vision, political man and discourse are opposed to family life.

    5. The polis and the family

    The economic enters the sphere of the family, in the sphere of survival and not in the political sphere.

    He who could not satisfy his primary needs was not in a position to participate in public affairs. The domestic sphere is the realm of necessity; from it arose the natural community of the family.

    THE FAMILY IS THE PLACE OF NEED, THE POLIS THE PLACE OF FREEDOM, as opposed to modern political theories, where politics is a means to protect society.

    Thus, contrary to the moderns, for the Greeks, the political sphere has no violence, which remains in the private sphere, being a pre-political act by which those who will later become citizens are freed from necessity, being able to enter into the freedom of the polis. Violence is private, and is expressed in slavery, oppression of women, etc.

    But the public world is the world of equality among citizens (who are those who come to participate in the polis, always free Athenian men, with their material situation resolved). There is no government and power in the polis, command and obedience, violence and lack of freedom occur in the private, but not in the public.

    THE GREEKS CLEARLY DELIMITED THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPHERES, BUT THIS BOUNDARY IS BLURRED IN THE MODERN WORLD.

    In the MIDDLE AGE, the idea of common good does not imply the existence of a political sphere, but only the fact that particular individuals have interests in common, and one of them takes care of it.

    Whoever participates in the public (the king or ruler) makes a sacrifice, while for the Greeks, the polis is a prize, it is the great life to which only some have access.

    6. The rise of the social

    In the ancient vision , someone who lived only in the private sphere would be unhappy, incompletely human. In modernity, Rousseau and the Romantics reacted against the social, revaluing intimacy.

    In Greece, the individual was fulfilled by standing out, by gaining consideration from others, from his peers in the polis; the public was the place of realization of individuality, where they could show who they were. But when the number of settlers grows, there is a greater possibility that the social will displace the political in the public sphere.

    IN MODERNITY, THE SOCIAL EMERGES AS AN INTERMEDIATE POINT BETWEEN THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPHERES.

    Society is the public organization of the life process. And the danger of it is mass society, tyranny.

    Society is the form in which mutual dependence for the benefit of life and nothing else acquires public significance, where activities related to pure survival are allowed to appear in public. This is a different view from that of the Greeks, for whom any activity performed in public can achieve an excellence never equaled in private.
