POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY

THE FORMATION OF THE EUROPEAN STATE

Characteristics of the western state

European states appear between the 12th and 19th centuries, but the diversity of cases makes it difficult to establish an "ideal type" of "state".

Interpretations of the development of the western state

DURKHEIM links the appearance of the State with the growing complexity of society, the generalization of the DIVISION OF LABOR and the appearance of new social roles. The State would be a body that would help establish relationships of ORGANIC SOLIDARITY among the members of modern society, controlling education, and creating and managing common services. Its function is to "think" for society, made up of an unthinking mass, organizing the moral life of its members. However, Durkheim fears an excessive growth of the State, due to the absence of intermediate or secondary groups.

THE FORMATION OF THE EUROPEAN STATE

    Characteristics of the western state

Interpretations of the development of the western state

DURKHEIM links the appearance of the State with the growing complexity of society, the generalization of the DIVISION OF LABOR and the appearance of new social roles. The State would be a body that would help establish relationships of ORGANIC SOLIDARITY among the members of modern society, controlling education, and creating and managing common services. Its function is to think for society, made up of an unthinking mass, organizing the moral life of its members. However, Durkheim fears an excessive growth of the State, due to the absence of intermediate or secondary groups.

While in Western Europe the State would be the result of the spontaneous development of society, in Russia and China the State precedes a society that it organizes. The mechanism of the appearance of this State is that of the SPECIALIZATION of the organs that fulfill diverse functions, to direct society. Thus, the political apparatuses differ from the religious and economic ones, and their purpose is the conservation of the social order, in a vision of this in analogy with biological organisms.

In WEBER, the modern State is not defined by the functions it performs, but because it is a political grouping of DOMINATION, where some individuals or groups obtain obedience from others through the threat of the use of PHYSICAL COERCION, which is monopolized in the hands of the rulers, to be applied to the subjects of a given territory. This MONOPOLY is LEGITIMATE, that is, recognized as valid by society. Weber tells us about three IDEAL TYPES of domination: traditional (one obeys traditions), charismatic (one obeys a person with extraordinary characteristics) and rational-legal (one obeys rationally established laws, this being the typical case of the modern State , based on abstract and impersonal rules). In addition to RATIONALIZATION, the other feature of modern society is the growing BUREAUCRACY of administrative activities. Weber will accentuate the historical element in his analysis, referring above all to the European State.

For MARX, the modern State is an INSTRUMENT OF THE BOURGEOISIE, the political form of the social domination of a class that, due to its economic position in the relations of production, also controls the political. However, the State has a
